Not his first tour. He said this tour he's earnt the right to not be shot at so he's not going out on patrol, just kicking it back at base for the entire 6 months. By the sounds of it they've made him some sort of glorified storeman. Asked him how he felt about that and he told me that it's awesome. He said getting shot at isn't fun....... even though he showed me a pic of him sitting on top of an armoured vehicle manning the machine gun with a huge cheesy grin on his face. Apparently that pic was taken about a minute after the first time someone took a shot at him. He said it's not fun in hindsight.
Best of luck to him. My brother did three tours in Afghanistan (after one in Iraq)...thankfully, he is now posted to Okinawa. He's a Marine NCO. Fortunately, his worst injury since enlisting was bruised ribs...from a car accident half a mile from Lejeune.
