I am not referring to simply the fact that citizenship is given to anyone born in the United States. I am referring to being the children of citizens as well. What if we required people earn citizenship regardless of where they were born or who their parents are. By default every person born in the US would be a legal resident until they're 18th birthday. Following their 18th birthday they have to either leave the country or apply for a green card. they have to live in the US as an adult for a certain period of time before they can apply for citizenship
No country in the world does that. You are basically kicking all your children out of the country. Lots would leave just on general principles and the parents might very well join them. You'll say we don't need them but these are going to be a substantial part of your best and brightest and just about ALL of your young and strong. Where would these new deportees be sent TO, btw? No country has to accept our deportees I believe, how much more so when they weren't even born there I think a lot of the parents would object rather strenously too. You pay taxes all your life and stay out of jail, you'd think that would at least buy a place for your children You have this idea that this is a good country and therefore it has the right to be demanding of you, but there ARE other countries in the world and most of them will let your kids and particularly your grandkids stay. Some Republicans need to look up the definition of the word "home" one time. Now restricting the franchise seems a "reasonable" alternative but again, W.T. F. ? WHY do conservatives ALWAYS want to turn back the clock and take AWAY all the rights many of our ancestors died to secure? Do they wonder that most of us don't want to see them or those like them in charge, EVER?
Two minor questions come to mind; Why? and How? The first is obvious. The second largely falls down on the international law that prevents a country from rendering a person stateless. Where would you send the people who fail to meet your citizenship standards if there is no other country they're legally entitled to be a citizen of either?
The only change I would like to see would be to require that the mother is in the country legally, and that at least one of the biological parents is already a US citizen.
as long as we're doing away with the old rules I would assume that anybody who comes into this country would have the same opportunity...no need for visas etc.
Ending birthright citizenship doesn't mean no citizenship. Its when you only obtain citizenship by being born to an American instead of being born on US soil.
the main reason I would like this to happen is because I think it would be hilarious to watch far riders try to pass a citizenship test which studies show that most of them can't. I find it really ironic that the people who hate immigrants the most are the ones who can't even pass the citizenship test it wouldn't be allowed to get a green card if they weren't born here
