Financial independence is the bedrock of overall independence. So if we want to maintain our independence, we're going to have to figure out how to get more people into home ownership. We're on a steady trend in the opposite direction.

I'll take a wild guess if I may:

Money is going into real estate partly because there isn't anywhere better to invest it.
Basically the country is de-industrializing as part of Neoliberalism, and also holding
onto cash is not a good idea owing to inflating the dollar as a result of the Neocons
currently in power printing money for ever more wars.

Real estate is also part of an overall move out of production and into financialization.
I've left out a bunch of details but that's my guess.
