What's the best way to deal with race relations?

Deal with it openly and honestly through discussion?

Or, keep our feelings bottled up inside ourselves and strive not to ruffle any feathers?

Openly?

Bottled up?

Other (Explain) (BTW, I omitted this option in the other poll intentionally. Not as an oversight.)

Openly. You can't solve a problem if you're bottling up your thoughts.

I would think the best way to discuss race relations is to do so in a manner that is respectful rather than denigrating races other than one's own constantly.

Unfortunately, it would appear that few folks have an interest in that, but woudl prefer to constantly denigrate, mock, invoke stereotypes, and attempt to make themselves feel superior by tearing down others.

A good friend of mine believes the best way is the same way he deals with any controversy that might be, well, controversial.

He avoids it.

That explains what might be the sensibilities of many White Americans.

And that might explain why we have major misunderstandings and repeated evidence in the news, such as Trayvon and the OJ verdict. I see what that kind of lack of understanding and communication can bring about.

Can anyone else besides you and I see this?

- - - Updated - - -

But you do agree that open and honest discussion is the better way. Right?

What i agree with is respectful discussion, not denigration of races.

Who said anything about denigrating races? Are you insinuating that I am a denigrator?

I have said nothing about you. My foray into this thread was a generic comment that addressed the topic of the thread whilst not addressing any individual within the thread.

Honestly, I think bottled up could be better. Media is interested in creating racial controveries and hate because it sells. Keeping race at the forefront of social consciousness is not a good idea if we want to eliminate racism.

The best way is to think in terms of human relations instead of 'race' relations.

Openly and honestly. Liberal Media (and liberal politicians) have exacerbated racial tensions, by not being honest. They call tea party members/Conservatives/Republicans/Christians/Gun Owners/NRA Members racist (without evidence), call hispanic people white, when it concerns the death of a black person. They attempt to stir up trouble, by suggesting that any white on black crime is race-related, but consistently ignores black on black crimes. Then you have people like Oprah trying to compare something like the Trayvon shootings to that of Emmet Till, when there are absolutely no parallels.

Liberals have done nothing to wane tensions... because that doesn't serve them. People like Jessie Jackson & Al Sharpton need racism to be alive and well, because that's their bread and butter. They made millions on racial tensions... why would they want it to stop?

Just get over it and treat everyone the same. I realize that the older generation has more reason to hold onto things but times have changed.

What's to discuss?

There are people of all races who will never accept certain other races, no matter how much people want to talk about it.

Live life happily, don't treat people unfairly, don't whine when you're treated unfairly, and when the victims want to complain ... put on some loud music.

People call Zimmerman white because not only does he have white skin and no Mexican accent, he is actually half white. The same reason everyone calls Obama black, if Obama was still just half black but had white skin, would people be bragging so much about having a black president? I doubt it. Skin color actually does make a difference, I live in the largest border town in America where its 85% Mexican and yes there is a lot of racism here I even had a race riot at my high school with around 30% of the entire school participating in the fight. When there is a Mexican at my school with white skin, guess what people call him? White boy. It doesnt matter if hes 100% Mexican, if he has white skin they will make fun of him and call him white boy.

Even if the media did consider Zimmerman to be Mexican it would still be a hate crime against blacks, in case you didnt know, Mexicans can be just as racist as anyone else.

The Zimmerman trial was popular mostly because Zimmerman was not arrested the night he shot Trayvon, the cops did not even test Zimmermans alcohol level but guess what? They check Trayvons dead body for drugs and alcohol but not the (*)(*)(*)(*)ing guy who shot him. If Zimmerman was arrested that night than proved himself to be innocent (its why we have a speedy trial act) than there would be no major uproar from the public about Racism not only on Zimmermans part, but on the polices part as well. Fox News for example and many citizens were upset at "the liberal media" for not showing these 2 black teenagers who killed a white guy, the reason it wasnt all over the news is because the 2 black kids who killed the white guy WERE (*)(*)(*)(*)ING ARRESTED!! Zimmerman was not. That is the difference. It was actually 2 black guys and a white guy who killed a white baseball player, yet on Twitter a Fox News guy reported it as "3 black teenagers kill a white baseball player, where is Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson???".

You can claim all you want the liberal media is racist but I challenge you to show one clip of them saying something racist, I can show you tons of clips of Fox News being extremely racist with no question.

Thats a horrible excuse to not do anything about it. If we dont keep discussing it those kids of those racist parents will grow up racist with no outside influence trying to get them to not be racist.

Really you are going to call people for out for dishonesty?

,

and then say this....no calling out racism like we saw at some Tea party events, on Tea Party websites and of course birtherism. No one I know is calling Christians racist...certainly not all NRA members but the spokesperson gave a very racist speech about gangs of brown people raping your wife if you don't have a gun.

Some Hispanics identify as white....but I see how you lied there.

Except whoops the liberal media's race king Al Sharpton moved his office to Chicago for the very reason of black on black crime.

Actually there were lots of things that connected the stories....starting with no investigation by the police who sent the shooter home and tested the dead kid for drugs.

Maybe you should look into the work those two men are doing and not just repeating the Right Wing Noise machine talking points....they think you are stupid, don't prove them right

Stop obsessing over them. Doing so makes people more race- and self-conscious, and so only makes things worse.

I know the Democrats will never let this happen because they get too much of their power from keeping racial hostility alive and keeping minorities angry, but here is the only real solution:

IF open discussion revolves around solving issues. If however its just a whine fest and who has the biggest "victim" card then its frankly just better to shut up, plug on.

I can't remember if it was Jerry Springer or another show like it and for all I know it was more than likely staged but it started with gays who were harrassed for being gay as the main discussion of the show that day. One of the gay guys compared their plight to the Civil Rights movement of the blacks in the South and that upset a black person in the audience who went on to claim that no one has suffered more than blacks. Of course there was an old Jewish guy who then yelled at the black guy and the gay guy about how blacks and gays had nothing compared to how the Jews had suffered. When people whine like little (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)es all that does is bring on a game of one upping where everyone tries to out whine the other guy and nothing gets solved.

Problem is it's not the older generation that's keeping it going. It's the younger generation that is being indoctrinated from a young age to see things in terms of color rather than individuality. Most of the people who voted for Barack Obama don't see Barack the man when they look at him. They just see the color black. And black is something that must be revered so any and all criticism must be interpreted as hostility against the color black. Thus there can be no honest and rational criticism of one individual man's actions, beliefs, or policies. Because they can only see color. They can't see him as an individual so they assume that nobody else can either.

No, they called him white, because they assumed with a name like "George Zimmerman," he had to be white. They didn't know what he looked like, yet, and started crying racism. It's too bad you libs live under a rock and are so misinformed, otherwise you would have noticed who jumped on the racist bandwagon first. The liberal media jumped to judgement first and called him white. Once they saw the video of Zimmerman and knew about his family, they started calling him a "White Hispanic."

They called him White Hispanic... not Mexican. His father was white, his mom was Peruvian, so I don't know where you're pulling Mexican from. Maybe you just have a lot of hate for Mexicans, due to where you're from. You also said he doesn't have a Mexican accent... well that's because he's not Mexican. What does a Peruvian accent sound like? Why would it have to be a hate crime to begin with? There was no evidence of it... ever. Zimmerman called the police after seeing him and prior to following him. Plus, his history shows he's not racist. Though, I'm sure you really payed attention to the whole case, right?

Zimmerman was cleaned up on the scene, taken into custody (in cuffs), taken down to the police station, they interviewed him, and had to release him, because they had no grounds to hold him. There wasn't enough evidence. The only people crying about the test for alcohol/drug levels are those that don't understand the law. The city prosecutor could have ordered a drug test to be done, but didn't. They checked Trayvon's dead body, because they were conducting an autopsy. People don't prove themselves to be innocent... prosecutors prove them to be guilty. It's called presumption of innocence. Ever hear of it, or didn't they teach that in your public educational system?

The ONLY reason there was public uproar, is because Al Sharpton went down there to stir (*)(*)(*)(*) up, Obama came out and said Trayvon could have been his son, and the mainstream media touted racism. Don't even attempt to bull(*)(*)(*)(*) me - I was paying attention, you weren't.

Did I say the liberal media was racist? No... I accused them of race baiting - they do it every day. Post the instances of racism on Fox, instead of talking about it. All you liberals do is bull(*)(*)(*)(*) your way through arguments, without posting any proof. I'd appreciate some proof, you wolf cryer.

Racism has lost its' meaning over the last 5yrs... you liberals use it so damn much, it's pathetic. Some examples:

Proof?
15 Moronic Things Liberals Call Racism
Proof of the lie
Response to race baiting from a black Tea Party leader
Woops... Libs show true colors
LaRouche Democrats Responsible for Obama-Hitler

I could keep going... with the likes of Samuel L Jackson, Oprah, Morgan Freeman, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, pretty much everyone on MSNBC, CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS, the WaPo, NYT, HuffPo, etc. And liberal idiots all fall in line, believe and repeat like the good little lemmings they are.

I would like to see you defending Fox News being racist, here is a clip of Glenn Beck now lets see if you think its racist or not. (im almost positive you wont, although it clearly is)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cl0q89WzTbg
Glenn Beck makes a tweet saying "Obama has a deep seated hatred for the white culture" and Katie Couric asks what he means about it and what white culture even is and he dodges around the question for 3 minutes, its truly hilarious.

I am what is considered socially liberal on just about everything - but I don't think you or the left generally is right on that.

Very few people are actually full-on racists - they don't see other races as inferior. I think there's a good case to be made for affirmative action as being one of the most racist policies still in use. One might argue that it's necessary racism to re-balance the existing racism in society, but I think it's fairly inarguable that the mechanism itself is racist - it separates people into categories, one of them being race - it then makes decisions purely based on this race, not merit, etc.

The problem is, this sort of racism isn't necessarily bad. If a business owner, for example, wants to hire more Hispanics, blacks, or whatever - so be it, for any reason - it's his money. The government is a little different. Surely if the 1st amendment's prohibition on an establishment of religion applies to public schools, then the 14th amendment's prohibition on racial tests and insistence on equal opportunity applies to public universities?

I think this points to a larger issue surrounding racism: it has become a 4-letter word. Any action, by anyone, that doesn't result in equality of results for all races is seen as completely abhorrent. This ignores the rights of the individual. For example, it's perfectly fine for someone to only permit the entry of whites to their property: it's their property, they have the exclusive use of it for all purposes - they're not forcing anyone to do anything. It's perfectly fine for the Sushi place I often eat at down the road to have a strict Asians-only hiring policy, because it's their business - their property.

Racism is wrong to the extent that it initiates force. That was the entire point of slavery - the plantation owners couldn't give a hoot about which race their slaves came from - political circumstances made Africans desirable, but the real horror of slavery is the initiation of force, the theft of labor without consent - not the racial element.

Race relations is causing major negative damage to many people, purposely ignoring it and telling others to ignore it sounds pretty damn racist.

Racism can be very harmful even without physical force, the denial of jobs and homes to blacks causes mass poverty and widespread crime, this is proven time and time again throughout history there is no denying it. When someone is economically and/or socially discriminated against, it doesnt have to just be physical, it will cause the loss of many lives and cause many more to live hungry. That is literally whats happening right now, thats why so many people keep saying to just ignore race relations because they arent the ones on the (*)(*)(*)(*) end of it, minorities are. Affirmative action and food stamps does not mean poor people are living happy nutritious lives, far from it. Why do you think black neighborhoods are mostly black and white neighborhoods are mostly white? Because of the White Flight, a long period of time (very arguably still continuing right now) where whites denied blacks homes in white neighborhoods and the white people who did live in newly black neighborhoods moved away and took their businesses and jobs with them. You cant expect slaves to jump right out of slavery and Jim Crow laws and own their own businesses in just 60 years, sure some made it but the most as expected did not.

Claiming that I just call everything racist is a extremely common tactic that replaces any sort of coherent defense to the argument. Try again.
