White homeowner accused of shooting Black teen who went to the wrong house in Kansas City will face 2 felony charges, officials announce
A White 84-year-old homeowner who allegedly shot and wounded Ralph Yarl, a Black teen, after the 16-year-old went to the wrong home to pick up his siblings will face two felony charges, Clay County Prosecuting Attorney Zachary Thompson announced early Monday evening.
Andrew Lester will face charges of assault in the first degree and armed criminal action. Authorities have issued a warrant for his arrest and he’s not currently in custody, Thompson said.
“I can tell you there was a racial component to this case,” Thompson said at a news conference without elaborating.

The charges seem fair, under the circumstances.
The kid was definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Besides, what does anybody expect will happen in sentencing to a 84 y/o man?
PS--The Kid's GoFundMe has already raised over $2.6 Million.

According to the report from KMBZ radio, Lester wasn't charged with attempted murder but first-degree assault and "armed criminal action."
When asked about attempted murder charges, Clay County prosecutor Zachary Thompson told reporters that "the defendant is charged with an A felony, it is the highest level of offense in the state of Missouri, [which] carries with it a range of punishment of 10 to 30 years or life in prison. Other charges may not carry that same level of punishment."

 

Okay...but it clearly is what it is....an attempt to kill. The kid at the door was shot TWICE by the shooter. No-one is gonna tell me the shooter was just plinging. I don't care how old he is. That is a cop out.

Charge the bloke with what he did.....he attempted to kill, and if that means he gets a lesser sentence, fine by me.

Dude is 84, lives in KC. Is just as likely to be a Joe Biden voter who got scared. There seem to be a lot of details missing here, like why did the guy just respond by shooting through the door?

He didn't necessarily 'shoot through the door', though for some reason most of the news outlets are happy to write a story that that makes it sound like he did. The two spoke to eachother before Lester started shooting, though it hasn't been reported about what they were speaking.

Regardless, unless Ralph was making threats or attempting to force entry, theres no justification to shoot someone at your front door.

 

I always find it a bit odd how quickly people are responding to commotion at their front door. I'm not sure I would wake up to anything beyond someone kicking my door in, and I'm not sure that would even wake me up based on the location of my bedroom and our front door. My German Shephard sleeps at the foot of our bed as well, not sure she would hear that noise as she gets up in age. We typically have a fan running too. I've read about 2 similar cases over the last month and wondered both times about how this works. My only guess is these houses are smaller.

I mean, since we aren't supposed to know about the crazy lawlessness that is plaguing our cities these days, why would anyone be scared? Laws are odd in some states. Several of my friends got stabbed by this guy one night as they were leaving the bar. They found out that NM also did not have an attempted murder charge so they charged him with assault. Of course then they let him go when they didn't file the right paperwork by some deadline.

 

Totally agree. There isn't. Should other facts start to become clear, and there was an actual threat that the homeowner felt threatened him, the story changes. For now, though, AJ et al just want us to believe in blanket racism as the club they can use against the guy.

Actually, with the advanced age of the defendant (and, given the potential prison sentences), the DA decided it made more sense to charge the assault (b/c it would be easier to prove in court)...

 

Here is a similar incident without the racial component. Should be interesting to see if the reaction by people are different.
