The silver lining, according to the WHO, is that the virus - while more deadly - may also be less transmittable than previously believed.

The threat posed by COVID-19 continues to evolve and now that Nine US citizens have died, and the total number of US cases has reached 118 across 16 states, Trump's decision to use the phrase "new hoax" while discussing this virus and to declare that the number of cases in the US "are going very substantially down, not up," has proven truly idiotic.

Prepare by learning about the virus, wash your hands, and ensuring that you have enough supplies at home that you could quarantine your family for 2-3 weeks without relying on deliveries or trips to the Grocery Store and Pharmacy.

    It is your Civic Duty.

80 years old with several prior medical conditions? I’d be worried.

Interesting update, except for the part where you couldn't resist making a global virus about the president.

Wouldn't you expect the global rate to increase as 2nd and 3rd world countries get infected? It seems more reasonable to look at death rates by countries which have better or worse health systems. The experts have been concerned all along that some countries in Africa are likely to be really devastated.

Here as well.. Never thought toilet paper would be the first off shelves and Costco was empty on Wednesday when I went to get my normal resupply. Safeway was also out. Got lucky with Target and they were just restocking.

I've been doing the math daily on corona cases and mortality and have consistently come up with 3.5% so I'm a bit confused on why WHO is acting like this is something new.

Oh yea, totally a fair point and the mortality rate is also higher because of the initial outburst of a novel virus in China which overwhelmed the medical infrastructure by the time that the threat was recognized.

The notion of identifying the mortality rate based on the ability of the healthcare system is useful information from a hyper-localized type of analysis, but it is important to note that there are segments of the United States even - the most prepared - where the ability and capacity to handle a full blown pandemic will result in higher mortality.

Cities and regions are the first line of defense at controlling the spread, with support and backup from the CDC.

I think my city is going to get hit hard later this month and we don't have a way to handle it.

“...depending on the quality of the health-care system where it’s treated.”

9 deaths out of 118 cases? I suppose that could be 127 cases depending on how they’re relaying the data, but does that mortality rate make our system third world?

    Yeah. That’s smart ass rhetorical.

Kimberly-Clark makes a boat load here in the states and is expanding. VonDrehle makes commercial towels and TP and just built a new paper machine a few years ago.
