1) I grew up at or below the poverty line
2) I had to educate myself, via full time work and part time college .. because my divorced parents had no money.
3) I learned to value education by watching what the 'winners' did. I travelled (on the cheap .. backpacks, third world, etc) and I listened, watched, talked, read, studied, etc etc.
4) Myself and my husband have both been subjected to considerable discrimination throughout our lives, from both sides of the spectrum, in various parts of the world, and at home. My mixed race children have been subjected to racist taunts at school. Most of my non-white relatives have been subjected to racism at some point. My Sephardic ancestors were so monstered that they 'converted' to Catholicism. Enough for ya?

 

worldwide, there is one ideology which commits terrible violence with terrible regularity .. and it's the only one which announces itself via race/clothing etc.
