Federal Deputy Opposition Leader Julie Bishop has called on PM Julia Gillard to withdraw her fiery comments made in parliament this week, in which she labelled Tony Abbott a misogynist.

"It is a vile slur, she should apologise to the women in Tony Abbott's life, and she should withdraw it," Ms Bishop said in a speech to the Liberal Party's Victorian State Council in Ballarat on Saturday.

Ms Bishop opened her speech - in which she accused the Prime Minister of hiding behind her gender - with an address directly to the party's female members and candidates.

"You are here because of your qualities, you are here because you've been judged on your merits, you are not (here) because you're part of a quota system, and the Liberal party is proud of you," she said, drawing rapturous applause.

Noting that Ms Gillard's remarks on Tuesday went viral across the globe, Ms Bishop said many people were missing the fact that the PM had been defending then-speaker Peter Slipper, who has since stepped down after his "vile" text messages referring to women's genitalia were made public.

"Would women around the world be applauding if they knew her speech was in defence of the indefensible?" Ms Bishop said.

Ms Bishop defended Mr Abbott's personal and political record on women, describing him as a loving son, husband, brother and father of three daughters.

She pointed out that in his time as health minister with the Howard government, he focused on women's health issues including a free national cervical cancer vaccine and a centre for gynaecological cancers.

While workplace relations minister, he steered the Women in the Workplace Equal Opportunity Act through parliament, she said.

Ms Bishop said Ms Gillard could not blame gender or Mr Abbott for her government's failures and backflips on the carbon and mining taxes, live cattle exports, border protection and the state of the nation's finances.

She said the Labor government had spending, taxing "in its DNA", and that it would be left to a coalition government to bail the country out of hundreds of billions of dollars in debt.

"We've done it before and we'll do it again," Ms Bishop said.

Speaking before flying to Jakarta, where she'll join Mr Abbott along with opposition agricultural and immigration portfolio holders, Ms Bishop said Australia had vast opportunities to expand its trade with Indonesia and other countries in the Asia Pacific.

She hailed Mr Abbott's recently announced policy of a government funded two-way student exchange with the regions' nations. The policy draws from a 1950s Menzies-era initiative, and Ms Bishop said it would be a signature policy of a coalition government that would create "incalculable" benefits for Australia.

The country needs a coalition government now more than ever to "restore pride to this great country", she said.

It would be reassuring to see Julia Gillard display some character, some self respect, by setting the record straight on this issue. She has made filthy accusations, she is responsible for her own words, and the fact that her words have sent a deceptive and disgusting message world wide. If Julia Gillard has a conscience at all, she will be eager to correct the wrong she has caused, otherwise she will brand herself as having no regard for the standards of common decency, respect for others, and human dignity. I hope she can pass this test.

Australians have worked hard on being a "fair go for all" state, with tolerant attitudes. The 70's, 80's and 90's were great times. The mid nineties things changed in terms of people and interrelationships with one another. We became a dog eat dog society, trying to suck out whatever we could from our next door neighbour rather than simply lending a helping hand! Society should be about relationships above all else, but conservative greed has justified these dog eat dog attitudes under the guise of good business sense not common sense! You are accusing Abbott of being a mysogynist because his wife made a public statement AFTER Abbott was accused of mysogyny. What would you have done in Abbott`s position? I`m guessing that you would have hit her with an axe, and told her to get back in the kitchen.

Go and look up the word mysogyny and then come here and explain how Mrs Abbot speaking publicly in defense of your husband makes her husband a mysogynist. Interesting you use the term 'conservative greed', Paul Keating had a reputation for being arrogant and greedy, he spent huge sums of public money on luxuries for himself and it was one of the many criticisims of Rudd that nothing was too good for him when he was on is many (publicly funded) overseas jaunts. And we have seen numerous examples of greedy behaviour by other Labor and union identities in recent times. I reckon you weren't even born in the 70's and were too young to remember the 80's and most of the 90's and on top of this I get the feeling that you have had precious little paid employment, spending most of your short life on welfare. It shows in your attitudes.

Jilia Gillard hasn’t got a decent bone in her body. So the quick answer is no.

If I was Tony Abbott, I would be looking into the legal recourse of bringing Gillard up on slander and defamation charges for public defamation.

Gillard has definitely defamed his name and character publicly. Gillard’s lies have damaged Abbots character to the point where he could lose the next election over this.

I would certainly be making her “prove” in a court of law that I hated women and girls, as she publicly accused me of doing.

You cannot legally just put your own assumption on the definition of a word by accusing someone in a public speech of being a misogynist, and think that’s acceptable behaviour.

What would the outcome of this be, if the situation was reversed, and Tony Abbott during a speech accused Julia Gillard of being a Misandrist?

I think you would have feminist group in the country and every ALP female calling for Abbots resignation and blood, but its seems if you are a female, you can attack a male using any gender card and get away with it.

Maybe its time males started to highlight this indifference and point it out, instead of being a bunch of limp wristed pansies to frightened to say anything.

As for sexism, I can recall numerous times when Gillard has made statements supporting her own sex exclusively, but never once have I heard her support men only. It`s well time to ask the question. Piggy who?

 

Look they entered public life so they should realise that this will occur in today's version of Australian politics. If women are so stupid as to not see through this as political point scoring then they are as stupid as the politicians take them for. This election campaign will be the filthiest campaign ever...... When Abbott was Howard's lynchman he was just as derogatory and mean spirited. Now he is the leader he has had to clean himself up. Credit to the man, he hasn't taken Labors bait, it must be hard not to come back and say something like, " what about you Julia, pretending to be straight but hooked up with an old hairdresser mate to make Australia believe your not an old hairy lip leso ". Which I'm sure he would love to say, but as yet has declined. He has not been short of some mud slinging himself over the years.

In short they have both been as guilty as each other when it comes to cheap politics. In the end he has been called far worse than a women hater, and if you look at it with a conscious mind it is easy to see he is anything but. A wife and three daughters, who are all very independent and free thinking women, who outside of his life have been all successful in their own right.

So if women want to buy into the whole misogyny thing, it would prove all mysogynists ( I love this word ) right, and that is that a women is incapable of free and un emotional thought.

Margaret Abbott said that it was her Idea to go public in attempt to counter some ALP slime with the truth. I have no reason to accuse Margaret Abbott of being a liar, I would rather chew my own leg off than stoop that low.

 

Liking or disliking Gillard is not really the point. The point is; this vile creature is publicly accusing people of hatred, and getting away with these slanderous comments without any recourse. If Gillard can start accusing Abbott of hatred without any proof, then I don't see any reason why he cannot start accusing her of things without proof. Are you going to give us the explanation I asked for or not?
If you 'choose' to be on the dole then you are not eligible to receive it. The dole is not a wage replacement, it is a support payment for people who are unemployed but want to work and are earnestly looking for a job. If you don't want to work, just want to live the 'simple life' instead, that's fine but don't put your hand out for the dole, you are not eligible and certainly not deserving.
