It's only a maths problem in the sense that one of the heuristics for solving problems in mathematics is to 'turn the problem upside down' -- or, more broadly, see if you can apply a transformation to the problem that retains its original structure, but lets you see it from another angle. For instance, to add all the numbers from 1 to 100 ... 1 + 2 + 3 .... + 97 + 98 + 99 + 100 .... try adding them in a different order ...0+ 100, 1 + 99, 2 + 98, 3 + 97 ... I got this one right away ... but only because I had seen it before. And didn't get it the first time.
