Associated Press February 25, 2012 03:11 PM A World War II veteran said nobody helped him in the minutes after he was attacked and carjacked during daylight at a busy Detroit gas station and he had to crawl across a concrete parking lot to get help.

A roughly four-minute surveillance video shows 86-year-old Aaron Brantley struggling to get from the fuel pump to the gas station's door as people walked and drove by him Wednesday morning. The video was first obtained by the Detroit Free Press.

Brantley told The Associated Press said several people passed by him as he crawled, unable to walk because his leg was broken in the attack. The carjacker knocked Brantley down, took his keys and drove off in his car about 10:40 a.m.

"I was trying to go in ... and see if somebody could call the police and an ambulance because I couldn't stand. I had to crawl — I tried two or three times to get up," Brantley said Saturday. He said he was on way home from Bible study when he stopped to put gas in his 2010 Chrysler 200, which he recently bought to replace another car that had been stolen.

"People were passing me just like I wasn't there. ... I was crawling and they just walk by me like I'm not there," he said.

It doesn't matter what color he is. People had to have seen him being attacked, knocked down and his care left w/o him - yet no one stopped to help him...... what a disgusting world we live in.

Reminds me of the story of the 2 -4 yr old toddler in China who wandered out into the street, hit by a truck, then another and her little broken body laid in the street and people strolling back and forth - never bothered to help her.

 

Agreed, it's sad and absurd, regardless. My guess is that some of the witnesses might have recognized the attackers and realized they should mind their own, or perhaps this is simply how business is conducted in this neighborhood. People are afraid to get involved or talk to the police, sometimes just flat out apathetic.

 

Looks like the OP was hoping it was a white victim. Now it must be a justified crime seeing as how it was a black guy that got assaulted.

I walk through San Francisco some times and its not uncommon to be stepping over drunks passed out on the sidewalk. I certainly don't check to make sure they are ok.

Well, it WASN'T! And you can tell a drunk from someone who's injured, his leg busted up and trying to get to the store to call the cops & ambulance....

There are people who have strokes, something is medically wrong w/them - they don't act like drunks... you don't touch them, but you ask them if they need help!

 

I've done some serious crawling after a few too many in my lifetime. I'm sure it didn't look normal either.

Detroit too. I dont expect any different from there. I watched a video months back where black youths (funny) punched an old man in the face, fist clenched and knocked him out. He lay there. No one came to his aid......he lay there surrounded by black people and the attackers got on the metro and continued to laugh and joke about what they'd done. That person who went to the old gentleman's aid. a young white woman. one. young. woman.

Yes, I'm sure that's happened and those thugs are fairly young where they can move fast in attacking, but this guy is 86 yrs old - big difference.

You know what ... I would LUV to see your reaction and what you'd do if you were in any kind of accident - no one around and a black man came to help you. Would you let him or tell him to go away b/c he was black and you'd rather suffer and possibly die?

Let me tell you a true story ... about my own son.

He works construction and about 12 yrs ago, he was working in another city, setting up mobile homes. He & his partner - only 2 guys setting up mobile homes, which I tho't was crazy, but that's what it was - set up this one home, my kid was underneath it. He told me later when he heard a familiar 'click' or some sound, he knew what was going to happen ... the house was going to come down. He started scrambling as fast as he could thru the mud, altho the home was set up on concrete, but despite his fear, he forced himself to stay in the mud b/c if on concrete the house would crush him to death.... and the dr told him the mud saved his life....

He got to the edge of house where his head/shoulders was out in the open, then the house came down on him. Scott, his co-worker, was there alone, the housing development they were working in was a distance away from the residential area and Scott was shouting for help, struggling to lift up that side and he couldn't lift the house off my kid.

Scott told me that he didn't know where he came from, but all of a sudden there was this big black dude helping him lift that part of the house and held it up while Scott pulled my unconscious kid out.... by that time others were aware of what had happened, 911 was called and during the chaos and commotion w/the fire truck, ambulance and people all over, Scott tho't of the guy who helped him, looked all over and he was gone. Scott asked around if anyone had seen this big black dude, so he could thank him, but for some reason - no one else saw him, coming or going....

When Scott told me what happened while we were in the hospital ... I just sat there, speechless - all I could think was 'my son has a black angel looking out over him'.....and I don't care if that sounds sappy - I've heard so many, many stories of incidents like that and then it happened to my own kid...

But m/b the black guy is a real flesh & blood guy, willing to help others in need and doesn't need recognition for it...... but it happened and I'd love to give that man a hug myself.....

You should be careful who you look down on - you just might need their help someday....
