I worked at a facility where we were "supposed" to share our tips equally with coworkers. I always had problems with that.

    1. Not all coworkers work equally as hard as others. This means the guy (or gal) who earned the tip has to give it to the lazy coworker.
    2. When tips are shared, nobody benefits. Why? If I get a 5 dollar tip and keep it, I can buy a small meal. If I have to split it 5 ways, I end up with a dollar. I can't even buy a soda with that.
    3. Not all coworkers are honest. Some kept the tips they got, we know they did. So if they don't share, why should I?
    4. If I get a tip for loading bags into a car in the rain, and nobody else helped me, why should those who stayed inside in the warm dry building reap any benefits from the tip I received?

I support it for one reason and one only.

    1. Because someone might be working hard at another location and not be up front to service the customers. If someone is called away on a job at another location, they shouldn't be penalized because they went to take care of it and the person who got the tip didn't.

I never had an issue if someone helped me (or I helped someone) do something for a customer and only one of us got a tip, splitting it with them. That was never a problem. The problem lied when someone did nothing to help, and was sitting inside with their feet up on the counter while someone else did the work.

    What do you think?

If that person is breaking the rules then you get it on tape and present it to your supervisor or whoever is in charge.

You're absolutely right. Tips should not be forcibly shared with others who did not make a sale, help the customer themselves, or served them for an hour. I don't understand why they would have tip sharing considering everything you listed.
