If I opened my mouth they might know the general area where I am, but not exactly. I am no bleeding heart, and yes I have heard the home invasion horror stories but my conscious would kill me if I killed someone just because they are doing a B&E. That is especially true considering if I had the near insurmountable advantage over them. and I usally would. Unless the theives were unusually skilled in casing out my home in most cases I would be pointing a sequentially loaded* extended tube 500 mossy at them or him/her. Just in case I have a few other weapons for back up L&L. Due to several motion detectors I know where an intruder would be…so no worries. However you are correct, I am giving up just a little by allowing the dummy to live, but for me to live and face myself in the mirror its what I have to do. We all have to make those kind of value calls, eh? My home defense load is sequentially loaded* which means the first shot is BB sized (lead and only lead will do) for a good spread, then its double Oh’ then a special rifled slug then two rounds of double Oh then the last three are rifled slugs. reva
I would never want to live in a country or area that was so dangerous that I felt the need to keep a gun by my bed.
then stay right where you are..............Bear that in mind the next time you think King Georgie was right
I will stay right where I am. Done my 25 years overseas, now nicely retired. Right about losing the colonies? I take it you are referring to King George III
I'm a fiscal conservative so I have chosen to never live in a liberal cesspool. When the city in which I lived began to fill up with refugees from California who were determined to turn their new environment into California--without black people--I left. But, being a conservative and not living in a liberal cesspool, I simply don't have a pressing need to have a gun by my bed.
...and there are still those here who use it as flame bait despite it happening over 200 years ago and having nothing to do with the respective countries today. Those folks are pathetic.
I keep a 12 gauge by my bed. I am almost split down the middle on the current issues of today as far as leaning left or right but everyone who knows me thinks Im a die hard conservative I guess I'll vote as leaning right.
I have a rack that slides under the mattress which holds a sawed-off Remington 12 gauge shotgun on the side of my bed. By my right hand. I keep it loaded with birdshot because birdshot will stop an intruder at close range but probably will not go through the walls and kill a neighbor. A sawed-off shotgun is a perfect home defense weapon IMO.
Bird shot probably won't stop an intruder... this has been demonstrated time and time again... There are other types of buck shot that are not 00, and do not have the penetration issues.
I think bird shot is enough power for my circumstances. This is a small house. The largest room is only 15 feet X 15 feet. So if it ever came down to it I would likely be shooting from very close range. Probably within 10 feet.
Still.... each pellet possess little energy and little penetration.... bird shot is not suitable for self-defense. You could have problems if someone was wearing heavy clothing.
The same thing is happening here in very conservative east TN! Its like the fine science fiction movie invasion of the pod people* except the parasites are even mopre scary Marxist socialist types. Many of these people are upper management employees transplanted here in far east TN to recurit and manage labor etc for newly built factories and service companies here in this area of the country, one of the few areas of the USA thats fairly booming in construction etc. However the problem is that this area offers near slave labor wages and considerable tax breaks (while harming long time proptery owners) for international corporations looking for such perks. I love a society that has much aggregation, different kinds of people with different political interests etc. However just as with the border problem I dont want those minions that refuse to assimilate and merge with the population, preferring to participate in modern day carpet bagging. To them I say Yankee go home, the sooner the better! Do it yesterday and stop breathing our air!!!!! Lastly I do have a gun under my bed (a double stacked .45) beside the bead post (a 12 ga mossy pump cruiser), and one under the pillow a easy to use laser equipped .38 sp loaded revolver, and a AR-15 bushmaster dissipater behind the door (three of them) several in the gun propped here and there. They are just feel good insurance and investments etc. I have no children and when I have company I just close rooms with firearms. Besides, who knows the napa people might really be pod people! reva
It really depends on the environment you'll be using it. Most home use with kids don't want their walls compromised by errant pellets. Someone breaking into your home obviously isn't aware you're armed. In most instances, just the sound of racking your shotgun would serve as a deterrent.
while that might be true, it doesn't always pan out that way............... Why give the perp any consideration at all. They have broken into your house with some intent. Are you going to give them a chance to do what?
Oh don't make any mistake about it, I WILL shoot if they are in my home. These situations are never predictable though. If I rack my shotgun and the perp starts running, shooting becomes exponentially more dangerous to your family or other innocents in and around you house.
if you know your house, then it really isn't much of a problem. People love to play the what if game and draw some pretty dynamic conclusions. It's far better to deal with it once it happens. I don't bother racking anything. I always have something with one in the boot, ready to go.
I have no problem with how you approach things. I have an older kid in my house that stays up late. He is in a different part of the house (the basement). I have to assume that he could come up at the exact moment I encounter the intruder. I have to consider my son could be on the other side where I can't see him. I can't just go firing away until I am sure I'm not jeopardizing my family. Each situation has to be weighed carefully.
Just the sound of racking a shotgun gives away your position. Remember, they can shoot through walls too.
I have sort of an escalation of force loadout in my shotgun. First 2 rounds are birdshot, next are 00 buck, last are slugs. I keep the birdshot first because I am terrified of shooting through the wall into my neighbors house. I live in a townhouse which is connected to somebody else. If I didn't have any immediate neighbors then I would ditch the birdshot and just use 00 buck and slugs.
Same here but for my Judge. 410 shells first two rounds. Worried about wall penetration. The next are 45 colts to end the problem if needed. .
