Then you would know in close quarters they still need to be aimed since they would not have a wide pattern.

even at close quarters you need to aim much more with an AR than buckshot

Sorry but 'common sense' has no place in physics.

I know, I know, you 'own' a shotgun so you are an expert.

    shotgun at close range.

much wider pattern than with an AR at same distance

AR round will also penetrate a whole bunch of walls, your neighbors walls, etc etc.

thats the other problem with using an AR for home defense

A shotgun has really high recoil. They make shooting vests with shoulder padding for them.

I'd rather have a weapon, and never have to use it.

I would prefer my 12g but since I always have my .40 with me would be my go to.

    12g for home defense
    12g for turkey
    30-06 for deer
    40 for thugs
    5.56 for tyrants

The 5.56 in an ASSAULT rifle is used by the military specifically because of its greater possibility of causing a casualty rather than a death. That is why it is an assault rifle instead of a battle rifle. Wars are won by getting the enemy to stop fighting. When a soldier starts seeing that even a slight would may kill him because the ability of his people to tend to the wounded is overwhelmed they start surrendering. This is a FACT. The 5.56 NATO round based AR is the least deadly weapon ever carried into battle since the muzzle loaded weapons.

Defending your home is NOT a war. You don't want to wound an attacker! You want to STOP their ability to do you harm as fast as possible while doing as little damage as possible to your home, neighbors, or other innocents in the area. The idea that any 22 caliber weapon is equal to a 12 ga shotgun at home distances is insanity. A 12 gauge shooting #4 buck throws 30 .22 caliber pellets EVERY TIME YOU PULL THE TRIGGER. They will all hit in a small area it home distances and will create a truly devastating wound. Anyone hit in the chest with ONE shot from a 12 ga shotgun is down and out. I have seen people persist in attacking with SEVERAL 5.56 hits in the chest. They may die later but they were still trying to shoot me so I had to shoot them some more. This will not happen to you with a 12 ga shotgun.

A light assault rifle is NOT what you want for home defense. Home defense is not a war or game. You have neighbors and you really don't want rifle rounds with full metal jackets going through thin walls and killing or wounding them. You may have loved ones in the line of fire but unseen and don't want to harm them. Cutting loose with an AR has almost as much potential in the hands of an untrained marksman to harm innocents as it does an attacker.

In the list that was offered for this survey I chose the .45 simple because it is a stopper and a 12 ga wasn't offered. Even the little M1 in .30 caliber carbine was a better stopper than the M16. Assault weapons are intended for a different purpose than a defensive weapon. You are not going to carry a defensive weapon for days on end. You don't care that the ammo is light so you can carry more. You really don't care about anything except stopping your family from being harmed. I will tell you this, just the SOUND of a 12 ga pump clearing and loading a round may do more than shooting at someone with an assault rifle! Lord GOD that is a terrible sound when heard in a dark place near by. Getting an attacker to leave with NO shots fire is a BIG win EVERY TIME. There is almost nothing with more intimidation than the 12 ga at house distances.

Acres is a measure of land area, not distance. An acre is 43,560 square feet. An acre of land can be a foot wide and 43,560 feet long (or 8 miles), or it can be 208 feet by 208 feet.

Not really. The 5.56 was used for low recoil and the AR-15/M-16 chosen so that smaller people could shoot it full auto. It was not designed for wounding people, that's one of those silly myths.

IMHO, the whole racking a 12-gauge pump sound causing people to pee in their pants and lose all control due to fear is just silliness. Most urban folks don't know what that sounds like. It may scare country boys, but it won't scare everybody.

I normally consider an acre to be about the size of a football or soccer field.

    ^^^^ this

thank you for your honest and thoughtful opinion.

anyone who thinks wounding or killing loved ones or friends in neighboring houses, is heartless.

by that logic, an acre is 100 yards long
