I have no problems with your questions, Robert - I think they're fair to ask.

My answer is that I reject the assertion that Monticello honors slavery. I think it would be equally absurd to claim that George Washington's Mount Vernon, James Monroe's Ash Lawn-Highland and James Madison's Montpelier honor slavery. I would add that I don't consider Lee's home (Arlington House) at Arlington National Cemetery a monument that honors slavery, either.

Unless there's some inscription on the Lee monument in Charlottesville that honors slavery, I don't consider the Lee statue something that honors slavery. As far as I know, the monument is to Lee, not slavery.

Now, one might take issue with a statue that honors a man who fought to defend the CSA and its causes, which included slavery, but I see that as a different matter. We're judging Lee and his character here, not slavery itself.

As you might imagine, the issue with Lee here in Virginia is somewhat complex. Some people see him as a traitor while others saw him as a man who defended his home state against the Union and its armies.

However, regardless of my opinion on the statue, Charlottesville has shown itself to be a predominantly "progressive" community that is prone to supporting political correctness, and the presence of Lee's statue in C'ville conflicts with the prevailing political correctness in that town. I really don't care what their rationale for removing the statue is, but it's their community and they're free to move it if they want to. I don't live in the town so it's 1) not my decision to make and 2) none of my business.

I will add that there has been no movement or effort to get rid of Monticello nor do I anticipate that there ever will be. Charlottesville, for the most part, is a college town, and the University of Virginia was founded by Thomas Jefferson. I think one of the reasons why TJ isn't getting the treatment Lee gets is because Jefferson didn't fight in the Civil War. Indeed, he owned slaves and he was a hypocrite, which is one of the reasons why I consider him the most overrated of the Founding Fathers, but that's just the way it is. People choose to hold Jefferson to one standard and Lee to another. I think it's fair to call those people hypocrites, too, if you like.

 

So the trends of Marxist professors forcing safe spaces and stopping free speech on campuses aren't a trend?

 

The subject is the violence of right wing white supremacist Nazis. It seems you are trying to divert to blaming something, ...anything,... on lefties to avoid the subject. Stay on topic or go start a new thread.
