criminal background checks are racist.

I'm not kidding.

Since most criminals are black it is racist to discriminate against criminals in your hiring practices.

I need to like move to a more rational country.

Before the anal retentives took control the rule was that ex-cons had done their time and paid their debt to society. Now they do their time and are continually punished by being kept out of society until the day they die. And that's just not right. That's why people continue to be involved in crime after they're released from prison. The bigots won't give them a chance to live a normal life by getting a job so that they can earn a honest living. It would be more merciful to simply kill everyone convicted of any crime.

There's an actual problem behind this. I went to the Washington DC chapter of the ACLU. Apparently Pot usage down in DC is about the same amount for the black and white community. However, 90% of all pot arrests are black. There is an obvious problem here, you're not really getting everyone who breaks the law. Now this is one example, but if you did the time, and it doesn't relate to the job, why have it?

My employer asked for a police check as soon as I started working with the organisation, I work with young people. In no way did I believe my employer had any racial motivations.

and my business is all about gasoline and other types of combustibles,
I should have the right not to hire an arsonist.

 

If there's a criminal and a lawful guy applying for the same job, I'd have no problem with the good guy getting the job. This doesn't mean taht the criminals won't ever get a job, just that they're the lowest priority. And I think that's fair. I'm sure there's some employers that wouldn't mind hiring criminals, maybe some are even criminals themselves.

 

There are jobs to which people with certain criminal record need not apply. For the rest of jobs, your non-professional background really should make no difference, and I agree with you there - they serve their time, and should be re-integrated into society.

Depends on the crime. You don't hire child molesters as kindergarten teachers. You don't hire embezzlers into the Accounting Department. You don't hire tax evaders to the Treasury Department...No! Wait!

 

thats stupid!!! im black but even I don't find that racist just necessary. and even as a black women who tries to help in the community i am sad to say the majority of crimes are committed by black males. as young as i am i still wish after MLK the black community would continue to prove to everyone we're just as dedicated to our education as everyone else, but sadly.....*sigh*

 

So does that mean for your business, you wouldn't employee a background check to find out about a potential employee's criminal record, or would you just hire them regardless of their criminal record?

 

So you're telling me, even tough there's an equal number of pot smokers in the white and black community, 90% of the arrests should be black? That's not justice, no matter how you look at it.

 

Dutch has a point. And in my view, as long as it's criminals getting caught I don't care if some races are disproprtionally represented.

But it's not solving the problem, and if anything only encourages crimes. I'm white, and I won't be caught. So why should I worry about the police?

 

just because blacks have a higher conviction rate doesn't mean they have a higher rate of criminal activity.

it may just mean they can't afford quality lawyers and prosecutors are hungry for black convictions

90% of Blacks are arrested for pot. Only 10% are arrested if you're white. That's not deterring white crime.

 

No, but it is working against crime overall. Anyways, my point would be that the focus should lie on catching the whites also, not to stop catching blacks so whites and blacks are even.

perhaps. But lets look at other statistics that could be of import. How many percent of the population is white and black? How many percent of the black population is poor? Those data might help explain

 

Valid point, but if we know that about 50% of all pot users in DC are Black, and another 50% white, we don't need to know how many people are in total are in each population.
