Our current government seems to have trashed this fundamental principle. "Orders of Magnitude" means keeping your priorities in order, so that you don't destroy the objective and purpose of your own work.

FAA’s diversity push includes focus on hiring people with ‘severe intellectual’ and ‘psychiatric’ disabilities

That's right, the Federal Aviation Administration, the agency responsible for the safety of airline flights and passengers has decided its obligation to the DEI mentality is so important, that it needs to seek out and hire- "People with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities".

Competence, as a requirement necessary to insure the safety of air travel- is being softened to balance perceived social equities.

This, like some other penchants of the social reformers these days, is addressing a perceived and isolated problem by introducing the potential for disastrous problems that affect many others.

The first Order of magnitude is to understand that the FAA cannot become a social service agency and still do it's job at the level of performance needed to insure the public safety.

Aviation has an enormous variety of tasks and jobs to fulfill. I'm sure they can find some task-appropriate employment for that demographic in question whilst fulfilling a community service provision at the same time.

Now we do understand some on the Right are challenged with the concept of affirmative action for the less-fortunate members of society. The only solution I can think of is for y'all to pretend they are unborn.

Not every job with the FAA is a flight controller. RWers get triggered on the most petty of issues.

I hear the Goodwill and habitat for humanity has a position for people like that instead of hiring them at areas that require competent individuals for the safety of the public

The issue isn't the desire to help people who are less fortunate. It's the question of ignoring the limitations and saying they don't matter- then putting an unqualified person in a job that affects the safety and welfare of others, so you can tell yourself you have done something good. I'm sure there are many people with dwarfism who would like to play for the Lakers, or just make the college basketball team.
ALL people have weaknesses and strengths, the catch is to find what you have and learn to make the most of it.

Now we can tell ourselves that those in charge have enough sense and perception to keep that order in mind in their agency- but the record of these same people say that's not going to happen, and they are going to make stupid decisions to serve a conflicting objective as the expense of the fundamental one. We already have numerous people with serious mental dysfunctions in high offices. The focus on the reason the FAA exists must come first. I think ALL government is losing proper perspective, because the ratio of stupid decisions is rapidly growing, virtually normalizing.

If the people in charge of the country remembered what their job is, and put doing it well as the top priority- the nation wouldn't look like a clown circus. But we do, and those clowns are in many high places.

It's true, they are not all that. On the other hand- do you trust the people who make assignments to rely on competence when they have just been told to respond to DEI?
Perhaps you haven't noticed, but in a wide variety of situations- that has been done, isn't working and is producing chaotic results.

Most agencies of government are demonstrating a significant level of erratic behavior. We're seeing people ignoring the scope of their authority, the rules, the limits of their power.
The FAA does things like approve procedures, check certifications, all kinds of things related to safety that are paperwork procedures.

If the consequence of failure is negligible- you can risk it at least without killing people. But it's not needed.
A lot of people seem to that equal means all the same. Not so- I'm really good at some things, miserably poor at others. I have to learn to make the most of what I have, and not try to be what I'm not.
I can tell you that knowing that is one of the secrets of success. Find your assets, know your limitations, do your best within those things.

That's nice. Sounds like good rules.
The rules for political office say you have a Fiduciary Duty- which means you make all decisions in the best interests of the people you serve, your conduct all business will be done honestly and with total transparency.

Know any politicians that do that?

Rules are mostly cosmetics. They look good, sound good, and the people like to think they control things. But unless rules are enforced, there are no rules.
Then you can do whatever you want, and just tell people the job is hard, but you are fighting for them, trying to get justice......

Unfortunately, a lot of the people are buying that.

I'm not sure if your point is that you believe that cleaning the bathrooms, or taking out the garbage require great intellectual abilities; or that you think that people who are not intellectually capable are going to be tasked with Air Traffic Control... or something. In either case, it's clear that this thread is a lot of rant about nothing. The idea that intellectually challenged people should be left to die and not allowed to work has not been taken seriously since the 1930s and early 40s Germany. It is significant however, that it's Fox News who brings it up after all these years.

After reading that can I assume only the best qualified people are hired? If so, then why Pothole Pete's emphasis on certain people?

Naturally you took the post and make an end run for the far left goalpost.

You see no problem with putting people with drawfism on the lakers ball team, so long as they lower the basket for them when they shoot, and restrict other players so they can't run of move any faster.
That's how ludicrous this thing is. The directive did not limit the assignment of positions, it basically assumes like you do that the people who will make the assignments will not be affected by the political pressure to put people in jobs they aren't capable of.

I once knew a building contractor, who had no legs at all. Do not know how it happened, but he was impressive. He had a dolly he sat on, custom gloves to cover his knuckles to push himself around. he drove a good sized truck, fitted with special equipment so he could drive. Dramatically handicapped- and totally competent in his abilities.
But he did it on his own- and nothing had to be compromised so he could pretend he was a candidate for something outside his skill range.

Adjusting the standards to accomodate DEI is demoting the importance of the standards. Shifting the order of magnitude... going backward.

The mentality of the left seems to be enamored with the idea of inverting values.

I see NONE. What size do you think is the minimum to pick up the player's smelly socks and put them in the washer? Or did you REALLY think that EVERYBODY the Lakers hire has to be able to play basketball?

Obviously you made the mistake of believing that they would assign these people to jobs that required strong skills. Nothing new that you open a thread without a point.

You never thought of the possibility that there are MANY jobs within large organizations. I think you would do better if you pondered for a few minutes more before you open a thread. I'm sure it would have taken you no more than two minutes to read your post and realize that it made no sense.

Are you sure you posted the correct article?
Here is the TItle that I see:
Orders of Magnitude- understanding what must be first.

When I click the link, here is the TITLE that I get:
FAA’s diversity push includes focus on hiring people with ‘severe intellectual’
    and ‘psychiatric’ disabilities

^Nothing in the linked article title about "Orders of Magnitude", etc...:bored:

***As far as the actual topic?
    The policy seems rather ambiguous...

You have a nincompoop in the white house. You refuse to recognize that, because it's yours...... Don't tell us it won't happen other places too. The BS isn't flying any better than the other pigs the left launches.

Orders of magnitude is a guideline of engineering and problem solving. Ignoring it is a problem producing mistake. Placing Diversity over competence is such a mistake. The assumption that a person with disqualifying limitations would never be assigned to a task they were not qualified to do ignores the fact that we have a vast number of people in positions in government right now, that are precisely in such positions.
One of the first questions that should come to mind immediately is if the FAA is now going to become a social service agency instead of public safety agency. Have it's focus diluted.

Maybe some of you leftists will get it through you heads that people's lives are at stake. But you will just come back and call anyone who points that out a bigot.

Places like Goodwill offer wonderful opportunities from people with mental handicaps. My local supermarket has provided them with gainful employment, and they do an excellent job. They quite often do a better job than the high school students who would rather not be working there. But there are limits on what they can do. Compromising public safety is one of those limits

No where have you shown that they are placing "diversity over competence"

As someone else pointed out it seems you are assuming (or, more likely, trying to imply) that the FAA is hiring people with "severe disabilities" to the detriment of safety in our transportation system. Yet you offer no proof of that. You don't have to have an IQ of 120 to be a janitor or work in the mail room.

And nowhere does it say that they are hiring people responsible for safety that are unqualified to do the job. Hiring people with disabilities doesn't mean you are putting them in positions where their disability would hinder job performance.

They intend to hire people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities.
They aren't barred from the Congress or the white house either, and so we got them- and look what that has done to us.
