    after reading a thread about M. Obama school lunch program and the restrictions placed on what is on the school lunch menu. with many defending the program got me thinking that the best way to fight obesity with the young and the adult population would be putting restrictions on what can be purchased with Food Stamps by not allowing unhealthy junk foods and drinks be allowed to be purchased with those stamps

    the majority of the obese in this country are the poor the ones on food stamps, and now with Obama care being the law of the land with those obese poor getting the health care at the cost of the tax payers. it is only fair to the ones footing the bill to keep the cost as low as possible for who they are footing the bill for by making sure the poor is doing so by having a healthier diet. it is only fair to the ones footing the bill

    what I spend or anyone else spends on groceries has no connection to the discussion
    If you feel that we need to fight childhood obesity by restricting what the can eat at school then why would it be wrong to do the same as what food they are allowed to buy with tax payer money

    Okay...so how about this....I am a grocer and I will just raise the prices on approved items and let the taxpayer fund my profit.

    that doesn't work in a capitalist system for that to work you would have to convince every grocer to do the same other wise shoppers would leave your store and shop where it is cheaper

    and we already have a system just like im suggesting and that is WIC Food Vouchers Program where they restrict what you can buy under that program and it didn't raise prices on any items that only can be purchased with those vouchers

    Actually I have felt that food stamps should be treated just like WIC. On wic only certain kinds of foods are approved and they are all healthy options for the child and mother. I would see no problem with limiting food stamps to whole foods such as meat, grains, fruits and vegetables. No processed foods, no junk food, and no pre prepared foods like frozen dinners. This would mean that people would have to prepare their meals but that would be healthier and promote the family as well as the dinner table is a great place to get together and socialise.

    I have watched food stamps buy steaks I couldn't afford. I watch food stamps buy boiled crawfish that I would never buy because the prices. Yet there are lines of people with their cards out ready to pay $80 for two people to eat crawfish.

    Actually I think it does.. Its costs more money to serve a healthy diet of fruit and fresh or frozen vegetables than to provide a diet mainly of heavy starches....

    Yes I believe we should regulate what is allowed to be purchased with food stamps not so much because of obesity out of principle. I have a problem with people being able to use EBT cards to buy snow crab legs that I can only afford on special occasions and I actually earn all of my own money.

    I vote that we have each person who applies for food stamps sit with a nutritionist who will come up with a diet plan for one week based on your allergies, vegan lifestyle etc. Then the nutritionist will give the list of basic foods for that diet to the government and that is what you have to buy. At the end of each cycle when the food stamps are to be replenished you must provide all receipts to the office before getting more money on the card. If there is anything at all on the receipts that is not on your authorized food list then you will not receive food stamps for that next pay period.

    That would fix this issue.

    The problem is that many cheap foods are too rich as for nutritional capabilities, so that to eat "poor" can mean [in a not difficult way] to become fat. It's statistical. And think well: let's think to all the dietetic foods, to biological natural and healthy food ... and similar ... they are expensive in comparison with common food [for example the one you can buy in a Fast Food].

    Let's add that great distribution [supermarkets, to make it simple] has made a further cut to the cost of food [to buy a kg of Italian apples in a fruit shop is a matter, to buy them in a supermarket is cheaper].

    So the market tends to push not wealthy families towards low level food [I see the expression "junk foods"], since they cannot afford better food.

    In case of similar restrictions about what it's possible to buy using Food Stamps, the persons using them would buy less and better, but they would enter in the mean level market, causing an increase of the demand and so an increase of the prices [so that also the Middle Class would see the prices of their more healthy food increasing]. In the meanwhile the low level food would see its price decreasing and this would increase its consume by low level population [but with a job, so they don't use Food Stamps] and overall by teenagers and students [who eat and drink a lot and quickly!].

    This would generate even the risk to see obesity increasing in young population and in workers with low wages [since it would be even more convenient than now to buy junk foods].

    Raise Food Stamps allotments.

    However, do NOT allow the purchase or manufactured, processed carbohydrate foods.
    No Juices, flour products, brown or white, bread or pasta, no b'fast cereals and likewise no alcohol, chips or candy.
    Food stamps should be limited to the purchase of meats, fowl, eggs, dairy, fresh veggies & fruits.

    Raise Food Stamp allotments but, limit what can be bought. Imagine:
    Sorry, DEAR, it's Steak & Salad, again. Or Pork and Greens.

    I don't care about the Crab Legs but I do care when I see an extremely overweight Mom and Kids in the checkout line with a full cart of Cookies, Soda, Candy, Chips, Hot Pockets...etc.

    The Mom and the Kid's are all MORBIDLY OBESE which is an ACTUAL MEDICAL TERM AND CONDITION!!

    It is when Body Fat Percentage is at or above 40%.

    Now I EAT LIKE 2 HORSES!!!

    I am 6 foot 1.7 inches tall and I have...well right now as I was over in the Middle East for weeks so I lost a lot of weight and now I have been eating constantly....at 229 lbs....and I want to get back to a healthy all muscle 238 lbs.

    Weight is not a general concern within reason if the added weight is muscle as muscle is heavier than fat so a 5 foot 10 inch NFL Running Back can weigh 220 to 230 lbs but that is with 3% Body Fat.

    But this last woman I saw was about 5 foot 3 inches and weighing in at about 270 lbs and her daughter was about the same height and heavier and her son was about 5 foot 6 and age at about 13 weighing in at about 300 lbs.

    Thing is....I KNOW I EAT MORE THAN ALL 3 OF THEM PUT TOGETHER ON A DAILY BASIS!!!

    I eat about 4500 to 6000 calories a day but WHAT I EAT AND DRINK as well as my daily exercise regiment keeps me in a state of way above average strength, shape, dense musculature and high flexibility.

    HOW?

    The foods and drinks that are bad for your body and make a person but on body fat are very EASY to recognize.

    PASTA, BREADS, PROCESSED MACHINE MILLED GRAINS, HIGH FRUCTOSE ANYTHING, MARGARINE, ANYTHING THAT ADVERTISES LOW FAT, ICE CREAM, ANYTHING WITH CANE OR BEET SUGARS...etc.

    Remember when the AMA....American Medical Association....told you to not eat a lot of Red Meat?

    Remember when they told you not to eat butter or eggs?

    Well....guess what?

    The AMA has found that the foods a person eats that has CHOLESTEROL IN IT....such as EGGS, BEEF, PORK, CHICKEN SKIN, LAMB....ETC......

    And you will LOVE this.....

    DOES NOT CAUSE OR CREATE THE CHOLESTEROL BUILDUP IN A HUMAN BEINGS ARTERIES!!!

    That's right.

    What DOES cause this Cholesterol buildup?

    Any pasta, bread, cereal...etc....that was MACHINE MILLED to such a fine powder that the Human Body cannot process it properly thus this Carbohydrate is changed in the body into ARTERY CLOGGING CHOLESTEROL!!!

    What makes a person QUICKLY GAIN WEIGHT IN BODY FAT???

    All the above plus any High Fructose Products.....Cane and Beet Sugars....any CANDY....Dark Chocolate is OK.....and believe it or not....if a person eats more than 1 Fruit a day....that Fruit being an Apple, Pear or Orange or Tomato.....as all are very high in Fructose....will gain weight if they do not work out.

    To lose weight safely and quickly and a person should ALWAYS talk to their Doctor first....they need to go on a HIGH PROTEIN...LOW CARB DIET!!

    A person can eat all the Green Leafy Vegetables they want daily and even use BUTTER on them or OLIVE OIL...as Mixed Greens Salads.....Collard Greens or Kale or Spinach...etc....no issue even with BUTTER!

    Beef, Pork, Chicken, Fish, Lobster, Lamb....and my favorite...VENISON....EAT ALL YOU WANT DAILY....as a persons body will only allow them to eat so much protein and when a person eats primarily animal proteins and fats their body metabolism TRIPLES.

    The best thing to do is have several dozen eggs boiled and waiting in the fridge at all times as a snack.

    After 4 to 5 days of eating all Animal Proteins and Fats along with Greens and Broccoli, Swiss Chard, Asparagus....anything that is not a Vegetable with any Fructose.....a persons body will go into a state of KETOSIS.

    What does that mean?

    Ketosis is a state a Human Body goes into where the body is in a process of burning only the Proteins and Fats and little to none Carbs existing in the Greens and Broccoli...etc....the body eats daily but as well.....because of the activation of the Human Bodies Metabolism running now at a rate 3 to 5 times greater than it was....the body WILL START AND CONTINUE TO BURN AND USE ALL AND ONLY STORED BODY FAT!!!

    Unlike STARVATION DIETS....which causes the bodies metabolism to hybernate....Ketosis kicks the system into BODY FAT BURNING....and NOT MUSCLE MASS BURNING!!!

    After the body reached a state of Ketosis...a funny thing happens....you no longer feel hungry...BUT YOU MUST FORCE YOURSELF TO KEEP EATING!!!

    Since during Ketosis as Human Body is burning it's own BODY FAT and because Human Body Fat is extremely high in calorie as well Human Beings have the absolute best body fat burn to energy utilization curve in the Animal Kingdom.....this means that a Human Being can outrun distance wise any animal on the Planet.

    A Cheeta or Lion or Bear might be able to run 80 mph, 40 mph and 35 mph respectively....they can only do this for short distances.

    Properly trained Human Beings can run for 24 hours or more without stopping at much lower velocities but even if a person was just JOGGING for 10 hours at 10 miles per hour that means that person will jog 100 miles in 10 hours where a BEAR can maintain 35 mph for about 5 minutes before needing to stop....a Cheeta....less than 30 seconds at 70 to 80 mph....and a Lion....again less than 30 seconds at 40 mph.

    So....I EAT!! I mean I eat a lot and I do exercise every day and because of this I am perfect shape and health BUT....even if you are 100 or more LBS overweight....just WALKING for 20 minutes a day....and if a person walks at say 7 to 8 mph....in 20 minutes they can travel up to 2.66 MILES.

    And even if a person uses just 10 lbs weights....and does curls and presses...etc....they can increase strength by over 200% in a matter of 30 days.

    But DIET is everything....and a person needs to take a Multivitamine each day as well as DAIRY is essential for this diet for proper digestion and excretion of waste so a YOGURT A DAY....lots of MEAT AND FISH....lots of GREENS and other Low Fructose Vegetables I mentioned.....ALWAYS USE REAL BUTTER NOT MARGARINE!

    ALWAYS USE OLIVE OIL NOT CORN OR VEGETABLE OILS!!!

    NO CARBS!!!

    NO SODA AND ESPECIALLY NO DIET SODAS!!!

    A Diet Soda actually causes an increase in appetite for CARBS!!!

    And remember....it is that loaf of WHITE BREAD that is KILLING YOU!!!

    Also....OJ....when a person first starts this diet OJ has way too much Fructose to drink as it will prevent the body from achieving KETOSIS.

    Once a person looses the weight....and if they exercise....they will be able to add in a greater variety of fruits and vegetables and juices with High Fructose as long as they don't eat or drink too much.

    And NO CANDY....NO CAKE....NO ICE CREAM.....NO CHIPS....NO FAST FOOD....NO DELI MEATS....as they add lots of Sodium and Carbs into them.

    Besides....I don't know about you other members but when I have a 24 ounce Porterhouse Steak in front of me with Grilled Asaragus with REAL BUTTER....Onions and Mushrooms pan fried in butter with chives....and for desert....a nice piece of DARK CHOCOLATE.....I have all I would ever want to eat!!

    One last thing....you can't use CONDIMENTS....like Ketchup or A-1 Steak Sause.....Regular unsugared MUSTARD is fine.

    You CAN....use Mayo....you can use any Dressing comprised of Mayo or Egg and Olive Oil Based Dressings such as Caesar Dressing.

    No crutons! LOL!!

    Those who buy FOOD STAMPS who are MORBIDLY OBESE should have a card that only allows certain foods to be purchased HELL....just to save their lives!!!

    what makes an Italian apple more healthier than an American apple? now I want you to compare the price difference between a 3 pound bag of apples and a box of cookies or snake cakes or a gallon of ice cream.
    Now I want you to compare a pack of 4 chicken breast a bag of rice and a can of green beans more then enough to feed 4 then compare that to the price of a frozen pizza big enough to feed four

    Ah no, I was simply making a reasoning about how the great distribution reduces prices for final customers. [Apples are healthy, it's proverbial, despite their origin].

    On the other hand American pizza is well different from traditional Italian pizza and sure it's less healthier [I had occasion to eat something like an American pizza in Norway last year and I found the base different from our common pizza]. But usually the problem is that on your pizza you mix too many ingredients making digestion slower [but since in our Western societies we always run, those American pizzas can generate troubles in assimilating to much fat]. But don't worry: also in this field we are becoming more and more "American" ...

    P.S. just for accuracy, the traditional Italian pizza is made by pizza pasta [flour, oil, dry yeast, sail], tomatoes, cheese and flavors.

    Oh well, then there is the problem of having time to cook the ingredients. Just you question for a comparison [I can make it in Italy] has made me think to the fast life of today ... better quick than healthy ...

    In an Italian supermarket you can find a common frozen pizza for 3.00€ [4.20US$]. And it's double. Useless to make the comparison ...

    It is the huge amount of Cholesterol causing Machine Milled super fine powder WHITE FLOUR that comprises the vast majority of calories.

    There are many different styles of making Pizza in the U.S. and just so you know....the TOMATO PLANT....is native to North America and Europe and Italy did not even have or use Tomatos in wide use until the early 1800's.

    People in North America were using Tomato Sauce and Cheese on everything from dough to toasted bread or Tortillas as far back as the 1600's and it would have been used even sooner but people back then thought since the Tomato Plant was part of the Nightshade Family....it was poisonous....so Tomatos were used as Horse Food...from the early 1500's on.

    In fact, pizza is among poor foods in Italy. If cannot afford to eat in a restaurant you will go to a pizzeria. Pizza is among fat foods which are cheaper than healthy foods and just your way to eat pizza, by imitation, has increased the consume of pizza in Italy. Before of frozen pizza you had to go out to buy a cooked one to eat or to carry back home.

    Well....I can tell you this....we have all sorts of Pizza.

    There is the Pizza style wich is very thin crust topped with diced fresh tomatos, basil and cheese.

    There is New York Style.

    Chicago Deep Dish Pan Pizza.

    Greek Pizza...very good.

    Turkish Pizza.

    And there is a style I like that a company called Papa Gino's makes that is thin chewey crust....fresh diced Roma Tomatos....and whatever you want on it....I prefer x-tra cheese and mushrooms...outstanding.

    In Italy and YES...I have been there many times....Pizza is very think and is eated with a knife and fork as it does not hold together...also very good.

    But Pizza and Spaghetti and Tomato Sauce is really not Italian....Pizza was being made in North America before the name Pizza existed as Tomatos are not native to Europe....and Spaghetti like pasta....Chinese made it first.

    True, and the most famous Italian Pizza, the "Margherita" took its name from a queen. Do you have an American pizza carrying the name of a President?

    Now, back to the OP,
    it's clear that the nutritional habits affect your health, but we should eat, tasting the food we like [and we can afford], according to our style of life. This would be the best way to fight obesity and I cannot figure out how a government could endorse such a policy without imitating Italian Fascism.

    a 99 cent burger at BK has a days supply of calories cheap.... 99 cents of health food wont buy much

    Thing is about the U.S....it is a Nation comprised of people from every Nation on Planet Earth.

    Because of this....we get restaurants that serve Cultural foods from every place on the Planet.

    Diversity is a great thing and although some people....the French in particular....who think National Diversity to be a terror and a weakness and something that dilutes what they think to be the PURENESS and CULTURE of France......

    ......believe it or not the French actually passed a LAW forbidding the use of American English Tech Words specifically a few such as Email....Googling...etc....they actually spent over $100 Million just to get all their Windows and Mac and Apple Sofware to not have Email listed...NO S#!#!

    Then the French who believe they are so enlightened and Progressive went and BANNED ALL WOMEN IN FRANCE FROM WEARING A VEIL!!! LOL!!! NO KIDDING!!!

    The French Cultural Ministry declared such things as Email and Veils to be eroding the very fabric of French Nationalism and if left unchecked could lead to....and I S#!% YOU NOT....they said....LEAD TO THE DESTRUCTION OF FRANCE!! LOL!!! AHHHH!!! LOL!!!

    That kind of thing could NEVER happen in the U.S....a place where Millions upon Millions of Muslims be they Sunni or Shiite....live peacefully with everyone else who are sick and tired of their old crazy place of birth.

    I thought non-sugary cereals were good for me as were fruit juices, in moderation. And being disabled I can only barely manage food prep with a microwave and packaged foods which for me includes affordable meats like chicken strips and I can't even open a can without help. Remember many people on food stamps are disabled and many of them have medical issues effecting meal preparation I need boxed foods, pre-made items and the like my nutritionist took this into account in my diet plan to make good choices.

    Depending upon Medical Conditions Doctors and Nutritionists will give you a proper plan to follow...as not everyone should place their body in a state of Ketosis.

    Try to drink Juices that are not sweetened by High Fructose Corn Syrup or Cane Sugar as it is exceptionally bad for you.

    Pure OJ is fine and there are many products such as Juicy Juice which use many pure juices from a variety of fruits from concentrate that have no issues.

    But be careful of Juices that advertise to be 100% PURE JUICE...and then you read the fine print and nowdays you might see...100% Pure Juice added with Cane Sugar.

    I know it must be tough but there are now Supermarkets that sell reasonably priced NUTRITIONAL BOXED MEALS....that are prepared for you.

    But remember....Cholesterol that clogs arteries does NOT come from a Steak or Eggs....it comes from eating Non-Whole Grain Pasta or Bread.

    Not a bad idea. Medical paradise.

    But it will never fly in Washington. Food stamps are big business. Those Federal dollars flow to agribusiness, markets, grocers, etc. So there's a strong lobby to keep things as they are. A lobby with bucks behind it.

    There are already limits on Food Stamps: no alcohol, no cooked foods such as rotisserie chicken, no non-food items such as soap or toilet paper.

    Something else - forbid the foods people want and they may not get food stamps at all. Yes, it is better to buy people unhealthy food than have them eat the same unhealthy food on their own dime and cut back on other necessities. That would be the reality. For example, a cab driver I often ride with tells me he lives mostly on candy bars and beer. Not an ideal diet, but he'd stick with it no matter what.

    If you look around, it would seem that 'Fat and frumpy' is the new 'slim and fit'. We of normal weight and girth are being shoved out as the ideal. Huge bellies and butts, thighs that resemble inflatable rafts and arms with dangling fat sacks are in. We had our day in the Sun. Now it's over. For those of you that have already achieved the state of gigantic, You'll have to avoid those trendy lil' 'lectric cars. Think Bus. Think bus with double doors. and hope that whatever vehicle you choose can develop enough torque to roll you to the next Fast Food Palace.
