We have solid alliances with scores of countries -- Korea, Japan, the NATO countries. We have solid economic and diplomatic relationships with many more.

I've been fortunate enough to have traveled quite a bit in my life.

When I was 5 going on 6, I spent a year living in Germany and Belgium.

When I graduated from high school, I spent a few weeks with German friends on vacation in Italy and Corsica.

Later, my family took a trip through Germany, Denmark and Norway.

I've been to Ireland twice. Got engaged in Scotland.

Once my kids were old enough, we started taking them places. They've been to Italy and Ireland.

Closer to home, I've visited Mexico and Canada. My oldest daughter is probably going to go to college in Vancouver.

Everywhere I've gone, I've found people to be people. Not everyone is thrilled by U.S. foreign policy, but they are generally just normal folks on a one-to-one basis.
