Wrong mate. Even I could buy a black market hand gun within two weeks, and everyone knows me as the bloke who openly hates illegal firearms, and will dob illegal firearms owners straight in, no ifs, no buts.
Does the fact that certain areas have to be declared "gun-free" make you think at all? It's the sort of policy that will be found in the US due to the high number of firearms in private hands. It's an attempt by the authority in charge to at least limit the otherwise lawful carriage of firearms in that particular area. I think it's pointless though. When you have to resort to that sort of approach it's clear that there is no effective firearms policy in a society. Private landowners (such as shopping mall management) can prohibit entry to people carrying firearms but out there in public it's pretty much open slather, depending on local firearms laws. So, speaking for myself, were I resident in a state that permitted it in the US I would be tooled up 24 hours a day. If I were going to the service station to fill the car I'd be armed, you can bet on it.
The movie theater in Aurora, Colorado was a gun free zone. Law abiding citizens honored their policy. Unfortunately, the killer did not, and was able to kill all those people. A law abiding citizen with the authority to carry a weapon could have made a difference.
How did you come up with that one? Are you trying to say that the innocent patrons would have started shooting each other? Or, are you saying that you think that not defending yourself against an agressor, like sheep in a slaughter house, is the way to go?
You would know because you are an Aussie living in Laos. Check. I know that you all have been brainwashed into thinking that the government will protect you when confronted with violent crime and that you have no responsibility to protect yourself or your family.
I think not. And here we get into practicality v fantasy. Ever tried to shoot in the dark when someone was shooting at, among others, you?
Is that worse than being brainwashed by the companies that make up the NRA into believing...oh sorry, yes, you're right, you do need to be armed so as to protect yourself, my mistake.
Where did you say you live, Redfern was it? Try going for a midnight walk around a locality that`s polluted by a high content of Middle Eastern garbage, or any other example of the stupidity of mindless multiculturalism. Be sure to write. Let us know which hospital you are in.
Another misconception by someone clueless about America. The NRA is an organization made up of citizens. Also the arrogant notion that people are just drones. Maybe that is your experience in life.
What part of "living in Laos" (third world country) equates to "thinking the government will protect you" I mean LAOS - nice place but it is not like Australia or Europe - they do not have the police infrastructure to prevent crimes like we do not because they do not want to have that but because there just is not the money
And if you looked at the history of the NRA you would have seen where it was bought out by the armaments industry years ago to be a whitewash arm for them. Americans have been sold a whole swathe of myths about guns - myths that do not even stand up to logic and reason
Well previous to living here, I lived in Padstow. A lot of fellow Australians there are of the Muslim faith, my daughter attended Bankstown High, it has about 30% Muslim, and about 80% from homes with non-English speaking backgrounds, loved the family days there, yummy food, people that are loving caring God fearing, but extremely nice people. We moved from there to Mt Druitt, not as many Muslims there and it shows. More violence, filthy homes, Bidwell was disgusting and a no go zone for police, ambulance, taxis and buses. Before that I was in Parramatta and my daughter attended a school there that again was about 40% Muslim, lovely people. Prior to that as my daughter was young, we lived in Tamworth near her grand parents. Very few Muslims in Tamworth, pretty much a white redneck town. Now there I would carry a gun, bloody rednecks, kids running wild around the streets at nights, extremely high sexual assault rate, very high gun rate in domestic assaults, very high heroin usage, very high unemployment. Now all that I have to put up here are the blacks, the Asian students, Drug addicts (mostly good old white fellas), its a smorgasbord of colour and culture. Street cafes, food shops, art galleries. I hate all this .... NOT. Aussie, I really feel sad for someone so bitter in the heart. I have lived in Liverpool, Punchbowl, Campbelltown as well. Speak not, unless you know what you'r talking about.
Here is an idea, there is a small percentage of Muslims that are dickheads looking for a fight, there is a small percentage of Australians that are also dickheads looking for a fight. These two groups keep flamebaiting each other for their own self centered interests and prejudiced beliefs. Why don't we stick you all out the bush somewhere and let you all fight each other, leave us, the majority who want a peaceful life, us that embrace multiculturalism, by the way, Australia has been multicultural for centuries, as has the USA. We have had German Clubs, Irish Clubs, Scottish Clubs, Italian Clubs, French Clubs, Chinese Clubs etc etc etc ever since I was a child. Take that bitterness out of your spirit, replace it with love, tolerance and understanding and I will GUARANTEE YOU ARE A HAPPIER PERSON, I am, I once thought like you.
That is the epitome of the gun control talking points. Bravo. Nothing like ignoring the history of guns in this culture to forward your particularly twisted viewpoint.
On Saturday evening last, I went for a walk. I walked from Redfern to my daughters near Riverwood. It's a 19 km walk. I walked through Newtown, Marrickville, Caterburry, Campsie, Beverly Hills and all the suburbs in the middle. I left Redfern at 6:00 pm and arrived at my daughters at 1:00 am in the morning. Along the way I saw many people, spoke to some, had a coffee with a couple who were amazed at my walk. NEVER ONCE did I feel unsafe or in need of any sort of protection. Oh and I do strange things like this every now and then. Like I also quiz EVERY taxi driver I meet, questions like... Do you find driving taxi's as bad as they claim? How long have you been driving taxis? Where do you come from? What made you move to Australia? What do you think of Australia? I am a strange person, I will be the first to admit it. This is one of my beliefs. The very first moment I meet you, is the point at which you will get the most respect from me. I respect all people totally until I get to know them, they can drop in my respect, you just can't go up.
I did but the truth will fall on deaf ears for those that believe that government will take care of them and feel that personally they are not their first and best defense or have a duty to protect their own.
Um I am nearly 60 years old, I deliberately put myself in these places. I did that walk to prove to some people that it was safe, and that it could be done, even by an old man with a total hip replacement. http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/Lookup/4530.0Main+Features32010-11
