Miley Cyrus worked with hip-hop producers for her new album such as Hit-Boy and Pharrell Williams and her new single sounds definitely Jamaican with those black producers' influence. Black music has had a significant influence on pop music in general since the 1960s, when the Rolling Stones started playing black music to young white audiences. There is nothing wrong with appropriating other cultures to enrich one's own and it's natural to adopt to a superior culture.

And I would add that, it seems the evolution of American pop music is evidence that our culture is also evolving (whether some want it to or not).

Did you read the Jezebel article, or the article you linked to is talking about?
so its not flattery and interrupts the fashion party, I didn't see where she was called her a racist or that any of it could be characterized as unreasonable

Jezebel is one of those tabloid sites that always have someone whining about something. Every once in a while, they make a good point, but more often than not, they can be ignored.

Cultural appropriation really doesn't concern me. It's just what people accuse others of when they get bored.

The irony of all this is that this sort of borrowing only increases when societies become more multicultural. If they actually see a problem with it, then maybe they should examine some of the less attractive aspects of cultural interaction.

    - - - Updated - - -

It's not oppression when you bring problems onto yourself. No one forces ghetto culture to have bad taste.

It sounds like bull(*)(*)(*)(*) to me.

And by the way, miley cyrus looks like a lesbian whore. Sad reflection on our society that such an idiot is even allowed to live outside of a psych ward let alone get time on television.

Whether or not you like "Cyrus" per se... I think the point is that one can hear various elements of different styles of music in that video.

She's not 'my' style of entertainment either, but that music/recording and video is well-constructed overall.

Get over yourself. Black culture has been integral to popular music since before Josephine Baker. The greatest music of the 1950's was loaded with black groups.

News flash- "Hip hop" is not culture evolving, it's culture devolving. Garbage entertainment made popular by ghetto white punks. It's crap, from top to bottom.

It's american pop music at it's worst, of course there's non white influences. As a matter of fact, mostly black.

Meh, as a musician I can say that this kind of music is unimaginative, repetitive, simple, and predicatable. I prefer music which uses different scales, times (don't know the english words for it, but you know 5/4 or 7/8 instead of just 4/4 all the time), quarter tones, and acoustic instruments. Not necessary to be a good piece of course, but it does impress me.

Edit: Oh, I see that my first paragraph can be seen as thinking white music is much better and that black sucks, I intended no such thing. I just don't like modern pop music, and stated some facts. I like earlier forms of black music very mcuh though, and the gengres it inspired, like jazz. love jazz as a matter of fact.

Hip Hop is cultural commentary, not the other way round.

Granted some is but viewing life as such would lead you to have a very negative opinion of humanity itself. You need a change.

I can no more deny what I see than I can deny my own name. All you need to do is look at what passes for Pop Culture entertainment, from television to music to internet porn, to see how far we have sunk. Add to that the ever declining numbers of in-tact family units and it is looking more and more like Rome's final days are deja vu.

We have broken the glass ceiling of common sense and cultural morality.

What's new? America has always been a microcosm of western ills.

    I'm 'me'; I just be.

Even so, those who would try to take American music/culture and stick it in this or that little compartment they make for it, are pursuing a futile endeavor, indeed.

That's all people really need to know.

Well, I can agree that I don't prefer some of the artistic and production qualities in the video... but I can also see that the work was professionally planned and executed... from the sound of the record to the video itself.

I would not go out and buy the product, but I can hear things in the music/recording that I wish I knew how to do and perform myself. :)

But here is an example of what I think is TOP NOTCH all the way!!

    One More!!

    And Another!!

And MWS!! (And with the WHOLE MIX.)

well of course, she's rich. But it's like a polished turd

Don't have any experience with music at all? It's okay, this stuff is on kindergarden level. We could just throw out miley during the recording and push you into the studio instead, and it will probably sound better even. There's no skill behind this music at all, but if you want to learn just play C Am F and G in 4/4 and there you go; most of the songs on radio fit that formula.

Well, I can hear/play more music than I can analyze (that's for sure)... even so, there are things going on in records that I may not care for aesthetically or intellectually, but are not so easy/simple to actually perform and record.

I realize that music is "business" also (not purely art); I bet Ms. Cyrus is aware of that too. After all, after just a few hours on this forum, it is relatively easy to meet up with many who put money/wealth at the TOP of their priorities; they aren't shy about making that clear to you either.

Sex sells; silly sells and well-packaged noise sells as well. That's commercial music. Sometimes, MUSIC as ART is what's being sold (and I enjoy that most).

My brother came within a week of repossessing Miley's dad's PA gear. He was (like most rising musicians) late on his payments. Then he hit it big with a song originally written for the Oak Ridge Boys.

Of course she knows it is a business.

yes indeed, it's business. It's just so sad that people don't want better music.

You seem to like very calm music. I can't claim that it's what I'd ever search for if I needed to listen to a tune, but it's fully okay music. Me, I like Frank sinatra and louis armstrong most, and the music of that era. But I also like latin and classical music. In fact, I think I like most music in a way.. Except modern pop and metal.

Problem is, they don't really 'know' what "better music" may be. I love sharing my older GOOD music with my young troops; I can see them learn from it (musically). And considering that many schools CUT music or music appreciation programs these days... it's not shocking to see that the youth are not capable of choosing things that aren't right in front of them.

Heck, because of my love for orchestral instruments, I'd tune to the elevator-music stations on FM... back in the 60's. It was the closest thing to inexpensive CD-quality there was at the time.

I hear all kinds of elements to the music; I rarely listen to music as just a "tune" or a "song"... I play the stuff over and over listening to what most every instrument is doing in-concert with the others. I do eventually listen to the music as a 'unit', but not until I've paid attention to the guitar, bass, piano, stereo-effects... etc. :) If you don't do that now, try it with something like Pink Floyd's "The Wall" (headphones help). :)

Trends. Nothing more. Culture may have spawned a trend, but people follow trends... not culture.

Indeed, they don't even know what the alternative to modern music is. But, older music is reaching them, and hopefully getting a grip, via some games.

oh really? If you can distinguish the bass line, and the guitarr chords, and all that whilst everything is playing at the same time that's very good. Maybe you should work with music? If you like how the small parts become one single piece of music I strongly reccoment joining a choir. There's nothing like singing your own tune while your nieghbor to the left sings his and to your right she sings hers, and together it's beautiful.

Black America is a separate nation from White America. Haven't you ever read the Kerner Report?
