I am surprised he lived this long. He apparently had a huge drinking problem. I've heard a few stories of people going to his shows where he was so drunk he couldn't remember his lyrics and an older co-worker said he went to one where he sang part of one song, vomited everywhere, and then left the stage and they didn't get their money back.

He is another example of where success and money are superficial and hide a tortured person. Those reports of his behavior indicate how troubled he was. One can consider that his "high energy" was false too. (chemically induced ...Marguarias are chemicals of a rather potent variety.
A very unhappy person can feel the need to drink himself into oblivion.

He was never "free" to be who he really was.

I am not sure if he was a drunk who found a gig that worked for him or if his job turned him into a drunk TBH. I don't know a lot about his history or personal life. A friend of my Dad's spent about 15 years on the road with various big ticket country acts running the sound for their shows. He said it is a pretty miserable lifestyle all on its own so he could see how easily people fall into the drugs/alcohol traps. That guy saved all his money, talked up everybody he could to make the contacts, and eventually started his own studio so he could keep doing sound but didn't have to go on the road.

Rosalynn Carter was one such first lady America could up to at the time. It was time for her to go. Former President Jimmy Carter will probably follow suit.
