The US state of Missouri has issued a lawsuit against the Chinese authorities, accusing them of “appalling campaign of deceit, concealment, misfeasance, and inaction” which led to “the enormous loss of life, human suffering, and economic turmoil” caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Under US federal law, individual states are unable to sue entire countries. However, the state's case argues that China’s behaviour over coronavirus and its implications stemmed from “commercial” interests, meaning they have the right to sue.

“Defendants are responsible for the enormous death, suffering, and economic losses they inflicted on the world, including Missourians, and they should be held accountable.”

    Wha......??

Republicans are truly lawsuit-happy these days... I have no problems with fully investigating the origin of the COVID-19 and punishing anybody found responsible, but this isn't the way to do that...

I had to laugh when I clicked on the lawsuit (link provided) and saw the full list of "defendants" here....

Depositions are going to be a bitch!!

They left out Yao Ming and the Ghost of Madame Chaing...

I think Australia needs to counter-sue California because resident Tom Hanks used too much vegemite during quarantine....

    Thoughts?

Republicans are truly lawsuit happy these days?
Democrats have filed thousands of lawsuits against President Trump since his inauguration.

As far as an individual State filing against a country, who cares?
If any Chinese virus lawsuit is proven to hold some merit, Our country and the world have options many of which are being exercised as I type this.
With respect to Thom Hanks, who cares, it's Australia.

Trust me... If and when China is found guilty by some international court (or simply public opinion), Missouri will not be leading the charge...

I think somebody took the "Show Me" state thing a little too far..

I'm also interested to see polling on this in his state... I cannot imagine even die hard Rush and Fox people think this is a valuable use of time and resources during a Pandemic...

Democrats have filed many of the lawsuits on that site... so have many women, civil rights groups, and constitutional groups, all with legitimate standing to sue...

Missouri vs everybody in China won't be one of them...

Missouri is one of many on a class action suit being created. Stick around and watch the fun.

I also don't think lawyers have much to add during a Pandemic. But some basic facts aren't in question:

-The Virus originated in Wuhan. Now whether it originated from a girlfriend who was making out with a guy, or whether it came from them eating some of the rare "food" in the wetmarkets, or whether it was accidentally released from the biolab, who knows and who cares, but it came from Wuhan.

-They knew about it, silenced their doctors. Literally murdered them and destroyed the evidence.

It's a clear cut case of neglect that in the end, affected the entire world.

How do you propose they collect? If they can't collect, it's just an impotent daisy chain.

Then they probably should have waited for that suit instead of this individual nonsense...

A class action makes a lot more sense instead of an individual US state...

And I have nowhere else to go, so I'll be watching...

Similarly to Iran: Withholding goods in the US Markets. What makes this a challenge though is that cheap ass China has very few assets in the US market. But it's not just American States responding. A Liberal Senator in Australia wants a Nuremburg-like trial and investigator.

In healthy and pragmatic ways, China must respond and be held to account for a sickness that affected the entire world.

Well, the issue with a "Nuremberg-like" trial is they (we) were able to identify specific people to put on trial.... Goring, Speer, Donitz etc

This lawsuit is directed at essentially 1.3 billion people.... Defendant A = Peoples Republic of China

When this issue can be narrowed down to some individuals or MUCH smaller subsets, come get me...

"Chairman XI, and the Mayor of Wuhan" And whoever more can be credibly called to testify on what they knew and when. I think that's a fair and possible defintion.

Granting that the complaint is legitimate, for the sake of argument, you can't do a class action suit for something like this. The extent of the damages are different for each person, state, or country, so there's no way to unify into a class. Missouri either has to do this effectively on their own, or they should petition the federal government to seek restitution in behalf of the entire country.

I am not a legal expert but I do know China owns $1.1 Trillion of US debt. That may be a good start.

This is one of the most deadly disease and the Chinese government did not take immediate actions to stop it and now the world suffers.

The disease is contagious, but the Chinese government said it wasn't for the first two weeks after they were told about it. They didn't correct it until January 14th. This is why in January, February, and even March US officials didn't think that it would spread so much.

What about other countries? Like Italy not taking the virus serious enough? Most of our infections came from there, should we sue them?

Should other countries be able to sue us for our misdeeds?

This is all pointless political posturing. I think the people should be able to sue the states for misuse of funds on frivolous lawsuits.

This is very much along the lines of Wile E Coyote vs the Acme Corporation

OTOH it might be interesting to find out where this disease REALLY came from
