These more Americans who want boots on the ground to fight ISIS are probably armchair warriors too?!!

If we do put boots on the ground, and this war drags on for more than a year, I want to see the draft
activated?!! So we are not sending our troops on multiple deployments, using stop lost, and sending
only sole surviving sons and daughters to war!

    It's all about shared sacrifice?!!

Lol! This is adorable. Dude, the Army has been over-strengthed and will not need a draft. In fact, it's so full that voluntary withdraws are being allowed in many reserve units that are not budget related. lol

If you did a poll in the military asking how many believe we need boots on the ground then you would see an overwhelmingly high number in support of it. And they are the ones who actually go and fight.

People understand that ISIS is a legitimate threat that needs to be dealt with.

The job of our military is to protect the United States. There is nothing wrong with the general public requesting that they do so.

To add to my point: The military is 100% volunteer, that means those of us that volunteer, did so willingly to fight. So why would you propose we send people who DON'T want to fight? Your logic is off my friend.

    - - - Updated - - -

Exactly, well put. We volunteer to fight, as that's the job of a Soldier. If there's a war that needs fighting, that's literally why we have soldiers.

The pro war oligarchy MSM has been working very hard to get americans once again behind waging more war.

Like you, I want to see a draft as well. For too many americans are insulated from losing their kids in these wars. We are abusing our soldiers by sending them back time and time again, with a soldier committing suicide at the rate of one per day.

Amercans would not be so ready for war again if they knew their own kids would end up over in that civil war, defending a people who will not defend themselves.

No sir, the MSM owned by oligarchs have done a good job in their propaganda, convincing americans that isis is a threat to the US.

The US military has a job of protecting the US, sure, but the US is not located in Iraq. Since most americans cannot point out Iraq on a map, they probably don't know this.

While I understand and certainly appreciate your concern for the troops but you have to understand that this is an all volunteer military. Nobody is being forced to join. I know that it is easier for many to say send troops because of the disconnect they have with the military, THEY aren't going or THEIR kids aren't going. But their kids volunteered, they weren't drafted.

The military itself believes boots are needed on the ground to combat ISIS. So it's not just civilians saying send THEM to war, the troops themselves are saying send US to war.

I was with a lot of guys who were drafted to fight in Vietnam. I volunteered but most didn't. They fought as hard as I did, even if they were drafted.

The reason we stopped drafting was because of angry constituents of politicians, who were losing their kids who were drafted in that war. So we took the pressure off of those men who send our people to war, and since then we have been involved in one war after another. Because now the politicians could say, well, they volunteered.

All americans should have skin in this game of war. And if they did, you would see less war. For we would be more careful of getting into them. And there would have to be a very good reason, like someone was attacking us here at home. It isn't called the dept. of offense, but the dept. of defense.

When ISIS assaults our shores, then they are a danger that should be defended against.

Do you believe it is good practice to wait UNTIL someone attacks you before defending yourself? An ISIS attack on US soil would result in civilian casualties. Possibly even something such as 9/11, maybe much smaller, maybe much larger. Either way civilians would likely be killed.

I believe it would be a very poor practice to wait until our citizens are killed before we did anything about it. Preventive measures are better than retaliatory ones.

If such a thing were to happen the citizens of the US would be screaming at our government for failing to protect them when they knew ISIS was a large threat.

I don't like an all volunteer military, except in peace time. For americans than do not have skin in the game, most of them. I served in a military that drafted. We had a cross section of people, well to do, and poor. The last time I saw a military unit, most looked to be Hispanic, people who were trying to get a leg up in life, and this was the only option they had. The people around here who volunteer have not hopes of incomes. How convenient.

I want to see the sons of rich people serve, of the middle class, and of the poor. And the only way you get that is by drafting them. All americans should have skin in this game of war and death.

During ww2, many people volunteered. Yet that was not enough. For some people will not go to war, if they can get out of it. Now, the only war we should ever be in is like ww2. For Vietnam showed us that wars such as that, that we got into due to a lie by LBJ, would have people burning their draftcards.

We tried hard not to keep sending the same men back to wage war during ww2. For doing this wrecks the brains of man. Yet with the all volunteer forces we have to keep sending the same guys back, and we don't really care as a nation what this does to many of those men. We used to care. If we are gonna wage these incessant wars, we need a military large enough so that like in Vietnam, if you survived it, you didn't have to go back. I had a friend who volunteered to go back for a 3rd time and the army said hell no. They were smarter than he was.

"when ISIS assaults our shores"? Your mentality of "wait to get shot before you can shoot back" is horrible. Don't worry though, Obama has that mentality too, that's why he changed the Rules of Engagement. It's also why 78% of the casualties in Afghanistan have happened under his watch. Because we can't shoot back until we've been shot.

No, but preemptive war is a very old ploy and you know it. If Russia is building up forces, their navy, to storm our shores, that is one thing. But ISIS is no russia. You can lower the bar to justify waging war, and that is what I see happening when it comes to isis or any other group like that.

A little logic and reason goes a long way here. Too bad we don't use it.

I understand that but one of the main reasons people have so many deployments under their belts isn't necessarily due to a lack of troops. All sorts of things play a part in that. It depends on which type of base you are at, if you have a gung ho Commander, etc. Some bases are rapid deploy bases to where they are always gone. I was in a unit like that. I also know people who have made E-6 and E-7 and have never seen Iraq or Afghanistan.

It's not uncommon to deploy, return, get PCS'd to a new unit who is about to deploy, etc. Or unfortunately for some just get stuck in a unit that loves to deploy. 10th Mountain and 4th ID are infamous for that. Those boys are NEVER home.

Even when we called for a troop surge back in 2008 we had more than enough volunteers signing up to go. We have plenty of people we aren't short on volunteers. If you feel that we need more troops to cut back on deployments then request that the government expand our military. In this day and age the military would have no problems filling in spots if we needed more people. There are always plenty of volunteers willing to join we don't need a draft in order to fill the ranks.

That is absurd, and it is also troubling. For if many people think like that, we will be forever in war with anyone who hates America.

We have not had a real threat since ww2. We have generated these threats that we then engaged in. A group of 30,000 is no threat to the US. They are a threat to Iraq, and if those people in Iraq won't fight them, we shouldn't care.

Now, if ISIS or any other group is a real threat, that is they develop a navy, a huge army, with nukes, and they threaten us, we draft again, and turn Iraq into black sand. That is how this should work. But the chicken hawks who like watching war on the tv set would not be entertained enough, and so we continue on in this lunacy.

The US is under no great threat today, and that is a fact. Now, Russia, or china might turn into one. But some group of *******s in sands of the middle east? I don't think you know what a real threat is. So you create them.

Provide me with your intelligence reports that say a group of 30,000 terrorists are not a threat to the US. Provide me a source. I can provide you a source that proves 19 terrorists can kill 3,000 in America in one day.

This isn't the Cold War anymore. Our enemies are no longer big scale nations who will attack us with conventional means. You will likely never see ships with the Russian or Chinese flag sailing over to attack our shores.

Our enemy is terrorism now. This isn't something that we can just see with satellite pictures. We can't eavesdrop on terrorist cells planning an attack on the United States. 9/11 was something that we couldn't see from pictures. We have to prevent these terrorist groups from becoming large enough to where they can coordinate an attack like that. Yes fighting terrorism is much harder than fighting a conventional foe. Instead of going blow for blow with somebody in a boxing ring we are stuck trying to shoot ants with a BB gun. But we have to do something we cannot just sit idle and allow them to gain strength and power.

You will never see a battleship with an ISIS flag off the coast of Virginia. That's not the type of threat we are worried about. We are worried about the threats we cannot see, terrorism. If we allow them to continue to recruit, arm, grow, and spread their influence then they will become a larger terror network capable of causing us great harm on our own soil.

We saw what happened when we left terrorism unchecked the last time. I do not want to ever see us make that same mistake again.

It is easier to wage war, for business interests when you have an all volunteer military. And that is why we have one. America is a war mongering nation, thanks to an all volunteer military. For if americans from all walks of life had skin in this deadly game, we would not wage so many of these wars. We found that out during Vietnam.

I don't like the fat cats children being safe as the fat cats make money from stocks owned in those corporations that make war goods. As the poor people die because they joined the military to get some income. The poor fighting for the fat cats. It didn't used to be like this. For I served with kids from well to do parents. Now I know lots of rich kids got out of the draft, but not all. And we had lots of upper middle class kids serving. I would like to see a breakdown of the economic positions of the people who serve today. I think I already know what that breakdown looks like. From just knowing who enlisted here in my own area.

I can tell you that plenty of people are serving in the military right now who are from middle class and wealthy families. Not everyone is running to join the military just to make money. I don't know the specific breakdown and I won't pretend that I do but I know a lot of people in the military and I know plenty of them who are from middle class families. I also know many who are from lower income families.

Many join the military for the money alone, many also join because they honestly believe in what they are doing and the money is just icing on the cake. I am one of the latter. My job equivalent in the civilian world would net me starting out making literally 2x as much money as I do now. Without the worry of spontaneous deployments and the threat of being killed. Or the month long field exercises and getting moved around every few years. But I don't take that civilian job I keep my current job with half the pay and 10x the BS. I do it because I want to. And I know plenty of other people who do the same.

I won't speak for those nations governments but I can speak from my personal experience on a smaller scale. I believe they may think they need backup. The Afghan Army wouldn't do anything unless we were there with them. Those guys were terrified to fight the Taliban without the US behind them. Even if it was a pure Afghan Army run mission they still would wait to assault until they saw us coming to watch them or knew we were somewhere in the area. They would flat out say it, we would pull up expecting a building to be cleared or something and we'd see them sitting outside smoking cigarettes and hanging out. We'd ask them "What the hell are you doing? Why aren't you clearing the compound?" They'd reply "Oh we were waiting for you, we are ready now, now we go".

Perhaps those nations don't have the confidence in themselves to fight ISIS. Or they know that if they did they would suffer more casualties if they went it alone. They know when the US arrives we are going to clean house. They may feel it better to wait until the juggernaut arrives and join in on the fight rather than fighting by themselves. Same thing applies to all types of fights. A schoolyard kid is more willing to talk trash and throw punches when he knows his teenage older brother is standing behind him with his arms folded. He may not be so willing to fight if it's 1 on 1.

"Our enemy is terrorism now". This is an insane, Orwellian concept. Terrorism is a tactic of possible enemies, not an enemy unto itself. It's like saying, "we are at war with the phalanx". Since ANYONE could form a phalanx, we are therefore always at war with everyone (was that Eurasia, or Eastasia?). So we spy on the entire world and potentially will fight anywhere in the world, including in allied countries, if some people there learn this tactic. And ironically, it is a tactic that we ourselves will use when convenient. When a drone fires a missile into an open air market, and then fires another one when the medics arrive, that's terrorism. War is the terrorism of the rich and powerful, and terrorism is the war of the poor and powerless. So essentially we are engaging in a "war against war". Orwellian and hypocritical.

No more undeclared wars. I don't want to finance them or be otherwise responsible for them. I sure as hell don't want to go fight one.

I'm sick and tired of Empire USA and its global shenanigans.

    - - - Updated - - -

Aye. Americans are terrorising themselves now, whether that's government doing so or our fellow sh*tizens.

What you you propose that we do then? If our government does nothing and this nation is attacked again our citizens will be livid that the government had failed to protect them once again. Our citizens will not be impressed with our government if another 9/11 happens here, or another Boston Marathon.

I understand what you are saying, we cannot go out and fight the entire world. We will never completely stop terrorism but we must try to at least contain it and prevent it from reaching our shores. When we see a terrorist organization rapidly growing in size and strength right before our eyes it seems foolish of us to sit back and do nothing.

If we do nothing and our country is attacked again then our citizens will be wondering why we did nothing. That is why so many are calling for us to stop ISIS. The citizens don't want us to wait UNTIL we are attacked before we retaliate. They want us to make sure we don't get attacked in the first place.

Which is exactly how it should be in a nation with an all volunteer military. The military fights so that the citizens don't have to. I don't want a country such as the era when my grandparents were young or when my parents were young. I don't want a country to where our citizens have to practice air raid drills. Or have nuclear bomb drills during the Cold War. Or where our kids practice hiding under desks in school. I don't want terrorism to reach our shores so that our citizens worry about suicide bombs or bombs on the side of the road.

I want to keep that mess over "there". I know it's a cliche quote but I honestly feel this way.

"We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm."

I never want to see our citizens worry about terrorism in this country. I want teenage kids to run around the mall without a care in the world. It's not their job to worry about fighting terrorists, it's ours. I wish that all of our citizens could feel the same sense of security as the little kid who approached me in the airport a few years ago and asked "Are you going to keep the bad guys away?"

I want to be able to tell the whole country what I told him. "Don't worry little buddy, we got you".
