The problem is it won't stop at social commentary when it's an islamic culture. Within ten years we'll havew discovered they're the center of AL Qaeda and building WMD's and we've invaded... again.

Well, the US/UK/Israeli and Europe gang of war crazies fully support establishing Talmudic "Sharia laws" on Yugoslavia, Lybia, Egypt, & Syria. So why whine about Iran?

Hypocritic is more accurate than "interesting".

Just because they claim to be just does not make it so. Even a simple minded moron would conclude that is not so through nothing other than observation. I guess thats why there are Obama voters.

The rules are known by everyone in the country. Everyone in the country clearly understands the consequences of breaking the laws. Without understanding the totality of the culture, I am not sure how anyone can make a judgement on how they, as a society choose to apply their laws.

When I went to work in the United Arab Emirates, they would only allow you into the country on Friday afternoon. Before the sun goes down, in the town square in front of the mosque, the sharif dispenses justice for everyone to see. I saw a British man getting hung by his feet by a stocks and he was beaten on the bottoms of his feet with a bunch of canes. His offense? He was caught a second time brewing alcohol in his bath tub. He was given a written warning the first time in the town square. The warning clearly stated what the punishment was for a second offense.

Oh, after the caning, the guy was peeing blood for three weeks afterwards, He couldn't walk for at least a month. If you cannot do the time, don't do the crime.

As long as Russia is involved, I doubt that. We'll probably just keep funneling arms instead. More often than not, we don't actually intervene in conflicts directly. It's far cheaper to just throw money or weapons at insurgent groups. That's standard protocol for not only us, but a lot of the world's major powers.

Being straightforward about punishments for crimes is one thing, but whenever a petty crime is punished this harshly, there's always a lot of room for abuse.

For example, any society that punishes theft by removing the offender's hand has no room for mistakes. If a person is wrongly convicted of theft, then he/she loses a hand without having actually committed a crime.

I agree. The weird part is the criminal almost always confesses in an Islamic country. To lose a hand or your life usually requires a confession. If you can understand why they confess then you have a pretty sound understanding of Islamic culture.

If your wife drinks a beer and they execute her, can you still have sex with her corpse?

I think you can in a lot of Muslim countries, unless she gets too stoned, of course. They`re known for their progressive, free thinking in this regard.

I'd imagine a lot of the confessions are "under duress."

In some cases, they are, especially with foreigners. In most of the smaller stuff, not so much.
