…Georgia officials said Monday expecting families are allowed to claim their unborn babies, or embryos, as a dependent on their taxes.

Fox 5 Atlanta reported “officials with the state’s Department of Revenue says that the tax change is due to the Supreme Court’s ruling striking down Roe v. Wade and the Court of Appeals’ decision to allow Georgia’s so-called ‘heartbeat’ law to go into effect.”

The Supreme Court in June overruled Roe v. Wade and held in the Dobbs case the Constitution did not provide a right to abortion, which returned the issue to the states, according to Breitbart News:…

his is great news. It is now as it always should have been. A preborn baby is a person and this is a great step in getting that recognized.

This only for now affects their state tax returns. It’s time to get this as a federal tax deduction as well.

This certainly reveals [with great clarity] the inherent contradictions which compose every system. If you agree that it should be the duty of the state to protect human life [as most might agree] AND that a woman should have control over her own body [as most might agree], then something must give.

This also shows how there is an equal amount of good and bad in everything. Abortion is perhaps the most inhumane act of all, but having the state tell you what you must do with your own body is perhaps the ultimate form of state authoritarianism.

Sometimes there just isn't any satisfactory answer.

I support anything that means less money going to the government. We should get to claim the government as a dependent!

I think this is a solid answer for those hard core pro lifers, instead of banning abortion, put late term restrictions on it and offer this as an incentive for those women who are torn financially. Basically, help those that need help and still give women the choice they deserve. This is the type of discussion our stupid congress should be debating, instead they sit on their ass and preach.

Wow! That is totally genius. Let's see the people who would receive this complain that they shouldn't be receiving it because a fetus is not a person until after it is born. Let's step up to the plate lefties and complain about this!

At least the right-wing is finally starting to realize they never considered fetuses as people anywhere outside of the abortion debate. Time to play catch-up.

They aren't sitting on their asses. Well, then again, they are sitting on their asses while they are consumed with kangaroo investigations to get Trump. Running the country is out of the question, even as inflation is rampant.

Hmm never been a double murder case due to a woman being pregnant? I call BS on your entire premise, as soon as one's pregnant you have prenatal doctors, prenatal care, prenatal testing on and on. All is designed for fetus health and well being.

Yes, it is, but Georgia can write the GA income tax code any way they choose, pretty much.

Are they going to give the money back should they miscarriage. This is eventually lead to some real messy legal ramifications, and in the end miscarriages will become crime scenes.

Are Georgia auditors going to be conducting ultrasounds to verify?

I don't think they will be able to claim a dependent on the federal form, and yes the potential for fraud is limitless.

Don't you think you would need some sort of medical verification?

If @Aleksander Ulyanov had his way it would.

He once stated that anyone that doesn't get the vaccine should be toted off to jail and forcefully vaccinated and then fined $1,000 and have their children permanently taken away from them.

Many people on the left often express extreme opinions... But that completely takes the Cake.

My hat is off to him!! Winner winner, of a deep fried chicken dinner!

If a person is visiting from another country [and is therefore not a U.S. citizen], they will still be afforded state protection under U.S. law.

The difficulty lies in which moral code takes precedence, state or God. If you don't happen to believe in [or get the significance of] God [or a higher power], then you don't understand the genius of the U.S. Constitution, that is, freedom is bestowed by God, not the government, so in situations like this one, God wins [as it should be] because the morality of mainstream religion trumps the morality of government every day of the week!

That is generally true but a non-citizen here in the country does not have all the the constitutional rights afforded citizens.

True enough, but I would imagine that being scraped or sucked out of the environment that is sustaining your life might be one of those covered rights.

Fetuses are not yet living people but from an organic matter prospective, if all else goes according to plan they would be born in the natural process. The idea that just because a fetus is not alive, that means it can simply be terminated was an inhumane principle, that is not all that different in my mind from the Teri Schivao case.

Double murder laws for pregnant women were created with the specific intention of challenging Roe. They didn't work obviously as Roe got brought down by other means.

And prenatal care does not mean the fetus is considered a person. If I have cancer, I get all kinds of special doctors, testing, care, and on and on, but that doesn't make my cancer a person any more than prenatal care makes a fetus a person.

Well, I can see fraud in this if Georgia does not allow a proper taxpayer identification number to be used to verify the name on the return as a qualified dependent.

For state AND Federal Tax Returns, you must have a taxpayer identification number. That being said, for federal tax purposes, it is one of three choices, social security number, individual taxpayer identification number, or an adoption identification number. For social security number, a person has to be born. For an individual taxpayer identification number, the person cannot be eligible for a social security number and must meet one of the requirements for such as number, such as a dependent on a US person's return or a spouse of a US person return, among others. Finally, the adoption identification number is for a child who is being adopted but the prospective adoptive parents cannot obtain, at the time of filing, the adopted person's social security number. And since state tax returns follow federal tax retuns, this is a seriouis conflict of practicality on Georgia's part. But then again, it's Georgia.

Finally, I don't see how this is possible. The supreme court in the Dobbs case simply stated that the US Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. It never mentioned in its opinion that fetuses are living human beings prior to being born. This is the misconception of the Heller case all over again.
