    I assume you mean if this happens before the party's national convention and when the candidacy has already been secured in the primaries. I don't know if somebody answered already, but the National convention decides who is candidate. They could pick that candidate's VP, or the runner up, or somebody completely different. The delegates will vote.

    So these primaries are just a popularity contest to show who is the favourite of the people? They're not binding?

    Correct. ALL elections are to show who is the favorite of the people AND they are NOT bound to vote for a corpse.

    Looks like you are not understanding what the conversation is about.

    Celebrations probably. As to what would happen, it depends on when. If well before the conventions, then somebody else could run/resume their campaign. If after the conventions, then it would be their vp pick most likely.

    I'm British, in the Commonwealth we have a MUCH more sensible system, vote for the party you like, the biggest party will be in power with the King as a figurehead.
