I grew up on the idea that vaccines do prevent infection.

 

Well, they don't, - they help your immune system fight it. For example flu shots help you fight the virus, but it can't prevent the virus from falling on you.

 

Flu shots do work against the strain they were designed for. Those who get flu after getting the shot just encountered a different strain.
All of our childhood vaccines successfully prevent infection. It takes immunized individual less than 10 hours to start producing antibodies, while not immunized individuals can take up to 14 days. 10 hours is not enough for those pathogens to get to a point where they cause symptoms or cause their host to spread it further. So, vaccines absolutely should prevent infection they were designed for.

 

Yes, they help your immune system defeat the infection. That is what immunity is all about.

Antibodies......to fight the infection. There is no need for antibodies if there is no infection.

 

Why are playing these games?
Vaccination should prevent symptoms and prevent further spread of the pathogen. That’s not what we are seeing.

These vaccines do prevent infection. Very well two weeks after the second dose. By 2-3 months post vaccination they do not prevent infection well. We had hoped for longer protection from infection by vaccines but alas it isn’t to be. Natural infection is a bit more durable.

People who claim the vaccines ONLY decreases severity of disease fell for another lie. People who claim vaccines prevent infection on a grand scale 3-6 months after vaccination are also misinformed. It’s an issue of elapsed time, really. Early they prevent infection, later they don’t. But severity of disease prevention is more durable. That’s the good news.

Memory B cell maturation/differentiation is much more pronounced after natural infection compared to vaccination. This means antibodies from these “better” memory B cells have higher affinity for new variants. An individual with naturally acquired immunity would be more likely to have a very mild or asymptomatic reinfection than someone with a vaccine breakthrough infection, especially as time from vaccination/previous infection increases.
