    Hi guys, I trust everyone is having a pleasant afternoon.

    I feel compelled to share a little occurrence that happened with me a few moments ago. It was unusually moving for me, and I hope it will perhaps do the same for you, or yet, for those that read here and may never comment.

    So, my friend is physician. Typically we will meet for lunch two or three times during the week, or depending upon her schedule, I will take something to the office for she and I to share...as I did today.

    Just as we were concluding, one of the nurse staff indicated that Mr. Jones (factitious name) had arrived, as her next appointment.

    I had been told of this young man before, obviously no breech of confidentiality, but speaking as friends do. Anyway, it was my first time to meet him.

    He was accompanied by the family driver, a man of perhaps sixty years old, who apparently serves as part time caregiver as well. Or at least in these situations.

    I was asked to assist in escorting the gentleman inside. Which I welcomed the opportunity, and am pleased that I was there.

    I am not sure of why there is no use of a chair, but there was not one with them, and the driver adamantly declined the use of one.

    The man, as it is, perhaps late twenties, was an honor student at university, and into third year med school, when he attended a function one evening. I do not know the circumstances. However, returning home he was involved in a traffic accident, which left this young man clinging to life for an extended period of time. Fortunately, in part, he survived.

    However unfortunate, he now has the mental capacity of perhaps a 7 year old, with lose of speech, and well as severely diminished motor skill. He can momentarily stand only if assisted, and attempts with great labor to walk, again assisted. He can not rise or sit unassisted. He is unable to use his arms.

    I'm a big guy, about 6'5 and very physically active, so relatively speaking, strong. This young man was almost my height, maybe 240/250, and totally helpless. I do not know how his parents cope. It was very difficult assisting the driver with him. Sorry getting off track..........

    The thing is, here is a handsome young man, once exceedingly intelligent and sharp, with a promising career path ahead, not a care in the world, had the bull by the horn... and in one instant, it all vanished.

    It really saddens me. And I hope for anyone reading, this will give you pause to consider the things you (we) take for granted, and the result of the actions/decisions we make. Most importantly, I hope it prompts someone to appreciate the things you have, your accomplishments, your friends and those that may love you.

    Don't forsake the opportunity, to thank someone for being a friend. Appreciate the good people in your circle.

    Appreciate life, daily, and be thankful for the blessings you have.

    :pray:

    Sorry, I'm silly I suppose. But at the risk of looking foolish, just wanted to share. Thanks to anyone that read it through.

    Thank you Shang.

    I've been in the process of seriously reevaluating my life. I think I walked away this afternoon, for whatever the reason, feeling more urgency. *sigh*

    Long difficult story that only I know the depth of... but the time for change is drawing near.

    Anyway, I wish you (and all you guys) a good afternoon/evening.

    Yesterday was one of those days where I just walked out of the office and went home in order to avoid any more bad news. I had called my wife and told her some of it. When she came home I was sitting on the deck smoking and drinking Scotch. Neither of which are my usual relaxation. I heard the front door open, and suddenly this song came on the stereo. It really changed my mood, and we headed to the bedroom. Point of this post? Buy this CD and hide it for emergencys. It is a simple way to make someone feel better, and say "I love you."

    I am no fool. I married a woman executive in the Entertainment Industry who makes more than I do! When we first moved in together the "dish rule" was alternate days. If you don't do them your day, the dishes are yours the next day! Call me whipped, but again I am no fool. I have learned to say "yes" the first time I am asked anything! This is why we have the "Boy's night out rule," every Friday night is boys night out in our home - no questions asked, and the door swings both ways!

    I am NOT having a good time right now.

    During the middle of school I got a call from my wife. Seems a hot-water pipe blew under the foundation of the house. Upshot was that every water orifice was shooting out warm water everywhere, and cracks have appeared in a few places. I left early and had a marvelous time.

    I've had better days!

    Just talked to my insurance agent - My plumber and I wanted the water lines rerouted, but apparently my policy says no - so, I'm about to make a blind date for my foundation to meet the jackhammer of her dreams.

    I'm sorry to read of the problem SW.

    I encountered that once before myself. Insurance company was liable for repair to plumbing only, not accessing the repair. It's one of the negatives of plumbing in a slab. And something that most slab homeowners are unaware of. :(

    Although more problematic than a crawlspace or basement (obviously), a good diamond saw and jackhammer will make easy work of it. For me, the most aggravating part, was the cleanup. The dust was really bad. But with good preparation (masking tape and plastic sheathing), you can hopefully keep it contained to a specific are.

    I wish you the best of luck with it. :thumbsup:

    You know SW, after rethinking the above, I thought I should tell you, your situation may well not be as bad as what I encountered. So don't stress about it too much, seriously.

    Depending upon how extensive the leak is, and probably in a home it is not bad, using a diamond saw and jackhammer will likely not be required. Thus not having the extensive cleanup. Odds are, your plumber will use a rotery hammer and chisel bit. It will be a little noisy and messy, but nothing bad.

    The situation I was in, was with an old warehouse building (converting to condos), and the plumbing repairs were quiet extensive, with rerouting. I'm confident yours will be much less aggravating. ;)

    Your insurance policy probably also has a little item that says you have to take precautions so it doesn't happen again. You might use that as an argument. If they want to keep paying claims..oh, well.

    The plumber and I both flat-out told the insurance guy that by not going the route of rerouting the water to overhead pipes, they were being penny-wise but pound-foolish. When you place new pipes in one location of an underground pipe where the whole pipe is likely going the same route, it's possible that in short order other leaks will follow and they'll have to dig up again at THEIR expense.

    Policy: Much easier than thinking.

    I'm also wondering if the water is going to be completely off for very long stretches of time.

    It shouldn't be, SW.

    If it's hot water (I didn't read back), the plumber should be able to shut it off at the water heater. Your cold water for cooking, drinking, flushing (lol)...can remain on.

    The extent of the leak will determine the length of time to make the repair. If you choose, you may actually leave the hot on, until most of the spot slab removal/access is done. Just one thing to remember... the line may (likely), need time to totally evacuated of water prior to making the actual repair. Of course, this depends upon the material.

    Anyway, again, good luck with it.

    Hey, here's an idea... you guys get a hotel room for a night. ............might as well mix a little extra curricular excitement in with the aggravation! ;) lol

    Okay, since I'm sure it seem to you guys like I'm a "know it all," (my apologies, I don't mean to seem that way), but another word to Stuart about his little project.

    I was reluctant to mention it initially, but might as well let you be prepared, just in case. After the repairs are made and everything is good to go, you may find you now have an issue with your water heater (depending upon type). If it is a conventional tank type, the stress of expelling so much hot water, for an extended period of time, will have stressed the heater. Sometimes, it is necessary to replace the elements, especially the lower, and/or the thermostats.

    If this is your case, and you do have a tank, I suggest having your plumber ohm them out, before he leaves.

    And (lolol), beware of installing plumbing in an unheated attic space... especially in a cold climate area. If you must, take extra care to provide sufficient heat in winter to ensure freezing doesn't occur. You've not seen an expensive mess, until you've seen plumbing in the ceiling burst. ;)

    Okay, I promise, no more ideas... unless asked. :p

    ~~~~~~
    Perhaps taking some medicine will help with the situation.......
    I would be so tempted to live it up in a hotel...for a few days. You shouldn't be inconvenienced, the insurance company is never inconvenienced when they take your money each year or month..whatever. One thing to get geared up for, your rates will rise. Mine did I had two leaks and after each my policy rate went up..sigh.
