Over 60 years , Queen Elizabeth's restrained behaviour and devotion to duty have endeared her to most Britons.
In typical low-key style, the 85-year-old queen spent Monday carrying out routine duties such as a school visit in the town of King's Lynn in eastern England, prompting one fan to tweet that it should be renamed "Queen's Lynn" for the occasion.
Four days of more lavish celebrations of her 60 years on the throne, known as the diamond jubilee, are scheduled for June when the weather will be warmer. These will include a 1,000-ship pageant on the River Thames and a concert at Buckingham Palace.

The queen promised on Monday to "dedicate myself anew to your service."
"I hope also that this Jubilee year will be a time to give thanks for the great advances that have been made since 1952 and to look forward to the future with clear head and warm heart," she wrote to her subjects in a message.
The royal household launched a festive new website, thediamondjubilee.org, allowing users to send the queen a message, listing 60 interesting or amusing facts about her, and featuring a photo timeline of world events during her reign.
The queen is now the second longest-serving monarch in British history after Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 to 1901.
During Elizabeth's reign there have been 12 British prime ministers, 12 U.S. presidents and six popes.

How fortunate we have been to have had such a remarkable Queen and one so dedicated to the wonderful idea of the Monarch giving service to her subjects .
She seems a remarkably hard working , conscientious and truly caring person , that even those who describe themselves as Republicans are obliged to admit that in the world of Queens ,our present one is very special, simply because she is a special woman and mother .

She's Queen Elizabeth the II, because there was a former Elizabeth who was Queen of England.

Unless I am psychic , I have seen that bewitching picture elsewhere on the Forum .
    How splendid she looks .
I even compared her to a british bulldog facially ( a complement my Majesty) and noted that her fierce white teeth were bared , ready to nip any passing Republican or Foreigner .

    I´m a democrat.

Having unelected head of states is rather medieval.

The EU is more democratic than Britain.

I always wonder why the UK doesn´t protest all year round and calls for referendum to call off monarchy.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing her face on every coin and most stamps if she and Philip were more like Fred Armisen and Bill Hader's portrayals of them on Saturday Night Live.

I'm rather surprised, considering she would be 408, were she still here with the rest of us.

Because there is nothing to impeach her for, unlike a number of previous US Presidents.

I saw Queen Elizabeth in 1952 in an open car or carriage .. We were in the street in front of Buckingham Palace. It was thrilling.. She was very pretty when she was young.

What has the Queen ever done to you that you would want her murdered?

At least I can tell the difference between Elizabeth I and Elizabeth II. That's more than you can do.

She is the Queen of a people indebted to my people. There is a blood debt that must be paid, principal and interests.

While I am sure many agree that she may of done a good 'job' the sheer thought that through nothing but the accident of birth our next head of state however ceremonial the role, could just take over without consulting the people of the the united kingdom. This is not something I am comfortable with.

I can only hope that having to put up with Charles as 'King' will awaken people to the great need to move away from 'royalty' and the stagnant out of touch political system we have to a more progressive, socially fairer one ....(yeah I can dream can't I??)
