Bankruptcies in Russia are up over 500% so far this year and last year was also a record year. Meanwhile household debt is at record highs as the economy sucks, inflation erodes the tiny buying power of average Russians.

Oh, there is one bright spot in the Russian economy though even if all else is bad. So many people fled the country, have died in Ukraine, or are currently drafted and waiting to die in Ukraine... That the government has now legalized child labor. Factories producing war supplies will now start hiring 14 years olds legally and probably a few 13 year olds if they promise to pretend.

 

Of course it the economy is growing. It's on a war footing. The Russian Government is pouring billions of rubles into producing munitions and equipment to fight the war and into pensions to allay the pain coursed by rising costs (inflation is now at 7.7%). Correspondingly unemployment has fallen to record row levels because so many people (especially young males) have either been drafted, fled the country or hired to work in the few key sectors that support the war effort.

The BIG problem? Firstly, Putin is spending the countries sovereign wealth funds (built on historic oil and gas sales) to fund this growth in economic output and the war in general. And none of this additional output is productive because it doesn't generate any increase in national income! The Russian government is literally burning through its cash reserves to produce it then buys only to see them used up/depreciated in this stupid war! There's zero economic return on this output.

It's not exporting weapons to other countries and generating foreign exchange that way. (Russian arms exports have collapsed since the war started to almost zero.) And it's not generating revenue for Russian companies unless they're in war related industries. The rest gain no benefit and yet now have higher input costs due to rising interest rates and labor shortages.
