More hours rarely mean more productivity. But there is no way this catches on here for a while. We still have idiots that do not use vacation time given to them by their employer or who think taking a sick day is a sign of weakness.

...... says only those who work the 8 to 5 for someone else. The rest of us who work for ourselves, work in the medical field, retail, etc. say days/nights/weekends is all the same.

There are many different ways to businesses around the world. Unfortunately, we are doomed not to see the benefit because we are already the self proclaimed 'greatest nation in the world'. If we don't already have it, its no good. We've seen it with nationalized healthcare and it would be the same with a shorter work week.

In addition we should be moving away from the standard 9-5. Its well documented that only around 1/3 of the population are most productive during those hours. Humans as a species are neither nocturnal nor diurnal, but each of us individually has our own circadium rhythm that makes us more active/productive during a different part of the day than other people. Nocturnal people that force themselves out of their natural rhythm to get that cushy day job are really undercutting themselves as they would be far more alert and productive, and better employees in general, working an evening or overnight job, but real career opportunities during those hours are pretty scarce. We could increase productivity a lot if we were able to change that and get people working during the hours when their biological clock are set for them to be active.

There is nothing wrong with work, when your work is your whole life I think that is a problem. But that is just me I suppose

Productivity decreases as the day goes by, in general. In strenuous jobs, it decreases quite rapidly. Fatigue is also a main driver of industrial accidents.

Each industry and company within that industry are different, though. I do strenuous work 12 hours a day. In a hot print shop. It sucks, but I alternate three and four days off a week. I can take a road trip and go camping every other weekend. I like it. Spreading 4 weeks vacation around is nice, too. At my age, time off is my goal.
Many companies here (manufacturing) do not operate on a standard work week schedule. Many (if not most) operate 24 hours a day, which is where the 12 hr. shifts fit in. But others I know of schedule four ten hour shifts, giving employees three days off. Those hours are ideal, IMO.

My wife works 12 hour shits. She is a nurse for the VA. Her schedule repeats every two weeks. She works 3 on, 2 off, 4 on and then 5 off. Technically one of those is supposed to be an 8 hour shift but she rarely gets it.

Nothing wrong with it. There are always a few like you, but most just wanna do their job and go home. They're there to make money, not because they enjoy it.

You think its a problem when people choose work? My father LOVED working. He could not sit still for the life of him. Even when he had a host of medical problems in his old age he could not sit still. He HAD to be doing something related to working. He loved it. And the fact that he couldn't do as much in his old age as he could when he was younger put him in a depression.

So yeah, that is just you.

I do think it is a problem. There is so much more to life than work.

Yep. If I won the lotto tomorrow I would drop my two weeks the day after. Not likely to happen since I do not play the lotto

Strange schedule but I like it. I might mention it to my boss. She must be exhausted after the four 12s.

If I win the big lotto I'd buy my company and immediately fire the shipping mgr. Lol.

But yeah, no two weeks from me. Bye bye! I'd talk the whole plant into calling in and give 'em a tab at the Moonlight.

OH yeah, she is. Even after the 3 she does not do much those two days to get ready for the 4.

When I was Shift Manager (one step down from store manager) for WalMart we worked 13 hour shifts. There were 4 of us, one in the store at all times with an hour overlap from 7 to 8 am and pm.

If you were the day guys you worked 3 on 3 off, the night did 4 on 4 off. It was the pits. One of the reasons I worked so hard to get my Masters done

We do a mix of 8.5 and 12.5 shifts then have an extra day off a month

Everyone works at their own tempo, to be redundant, some have a faster and harder tempo. I believe the usage of flex hours would be the most ideal and productive. We all have good and bad days, so those good days, one may want to put in more hours, and the reverse on the bad days. If possible, work from home maybe one day a week or every other week.
