Are you thinking of the dress white uniforms that the officers wear? I agree, those look too much like the Good Humor man! Marine dress blues are a spiffy uniform, I must admit!

The new USCG blue uniforms look too much like those of the Air Scouts (USAF) for my tastes. Luckily for me, I only had to wear one for about the last half of my service, I went in back when we wore genuine sailor (Donald Duck) uniforms, with the jumpers and the bellbottoms that had the legendary "13 chances to say No" buttons.

(The bellbottoms didn't have a zipper, they had a flap that buttoned over the groin area - three buttons on either side, and seven across the top. When you met a member of the opposite sex, and things became romantically intense, she had "13 chances to say No"... after that, she got the fid.)

(A fid is a long, club-shaped tool made of wood or bone, used to make holes in canvas, and unravel the strands of rope prior to braiding it together. The blunt end of a fid bears a resemblence to a... a... you figure it out!) :)

We appreciate all our service members, don't we?

Now, of all the names I've heard, fid's a new one. Heh, will weave it into a convo soon.

    LOL!!!

I got to the button part and laughed out loud! I wonder how many women know how many buttons are on those pants. lol

Is it me or did it get hot in here. Someone turn the fan on.

Yeah, I was talking about those pure white uniforms. They need serious red in them and a little blue and some serious brass color buttons. Its cool you joined the Coast Guard. I dont know many people who join that branch. What made you decide to join that branch?

OKAY....since nobody's going to discuss fids with me, I'm going home. Well, actually I'm going to stay with grandson for an hour or so until mama gets home, then I'm going home.

Y'all have a good evening! Watch for stray fids!

My friend's brother had gone MIA in Cambodia in 1970 (still MIA to this date), and I knew I didn't want any part of Vietnam. But, I also felt that I owed something to our country, and the Coast Guard seemed like a way to make a difference - saving lives instead of taking them. So, I applied, and they accepted me.

    This is a fid --

A sailor holds it by the large end, and uses the tapered end to unravel rope before splicing it together. A marlinspike is much the same thing, except a marlinspike is made of metal, looks like a large railroad spike, and is used on wire rope (cable).

Using the word "fid" in a sentence is easy - just replace the term "shaft" with "fid", and you'll sound like a shellback (sailor who has crossed the Equator, as opposed to "pollywog") in no time! Ex: "Are you going to be off this weekend?" "No, I got the fid. I've got to work."

BTW - I'm not a shellback, I'm still a pollywog, although I do belong to the Order of the Blue Nose (crossed the Arctic Circle).

Thx for the lessons, SC -- and thx for your service to our country! Love hearing about guys' experiences in the service. Too many never want to talk about it... esp those who've seen the ugly side of humanity. :(

I walked around a memorial circle between the WWII sub & destroyer in Galveston and was greatly humbled by all the lives lost on subs during that war. They had plaques in the ground that showed the sub's name, # of casualties (most were ALL HANDS LOST) and location & date. It's hard to comprehend losses like that until you see them all listed in one place. Very sad. :(

i unfortunately dont get starz so i haven't seen Torchwood this season. Doctor Who has been good so far, im a big fan of Matt Smith, almost as good as David Tennants though i still give the nod to DT.

As for whats bothering me, its the flooding in the North East and the destruction left behind. Its been a frustrating week or two but my problems are minimal. Im just sorry for the families that lost everything in the floods.
