Texas student's refusal to say Mexican pledge, anthem starts controversy . Posted on November 21, 2011 at 11:04 PM

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas - Every day students in Texas public schools pledge allegiance to the flags of the United States and Texas.

But when a teacher in a Rio Grande Valley high school assigned students to stand and pledge allegiance to the Mexican flag and sing Mexico's national anthem, one student refused.

The resulting controversy has one East Texas lawmaker wanting changes in the state's curriculum on how culture and patriotism are taught in schools.

15-year-old Brenda Brinsdon entered her sophomore year at McAllen ISD's Achieve Early College High School just wanting to do well in her classes.

But in mid-September she got an unexpected lesson on personal conviction and taking on the system.

Brinsdon said she stood her ground by staying seated when first-year Spanish 3 teacher Reyna Santos assigned her class to stand and recite Mexico's pledge of allegiance.

The teacher also told students to memorize and recite the the pledge individually.

And when the time came for the part of the assignment to sing Mexico's national anthem, Brinsdon again refused.

Good for Brenda! I am glad someone in this country has sense, kind of said it needs to be a 15 year old girl though. We can all learn something from her.

This kid will go far, so long as she is able to avoid being sent to a Liberal PC Re-Education Camp.

Strange that she was only one to do this. The other kids must be gutless cowards just like the democrats like.

It's not treason, but no way in hell should any student in America be forced to pledge allegiance to another country's flag...

Good for her for standing up...

Oh, yes, Right Wing Political Correctness FORBIDS a teacher using some daily example of Spanish to teach her class!

Right Wing Americans are the biggest crybabies in the world.

IS allegiance to America so fragile that it can be corrupted by a language exercise?

Immigrants built this country, that includes Irish, Italians, Germans, Polish and many others. Should we be singing all their national anthems?

Anyone who falls for that excuse is blind. There were a million other ways to teach the Spanish language. This is not the first time schools have pulled nonsense like this.

If your in an irish/italian/german/polish class why not

We sang "la Marseillaise" in French and "Deutschland Uber Alles" in German. Translation was the HW. Learned a bit about how they came to be/ background.

In a foreign language class it is surely not that strange to learn the anthem of the country in question? Or sing it? It is an important part of the culture.

Mexicans hate america. They are taught cradle to grave that america stole land from mexico 160 years and they have a right to come here and do whatever they wish. Mexico is the biggest enemy we have.

That's not what this is about. You need to understand what has happened there, many still believe that some of the border states should go back to Mexico, especially the Mexicans who live there. There have been instances of Mexican flags being flown over the American flag and things like that. This was a statement, it was not about teaching the Spanish language. I took Spanish classes starting from the 4th grade up till college and I never had to stand up and receipt the Mexican Pledge of Allegiance.

    Why not?

It would be good to learn about the basis of some countries, and how pledging allegiance under God to Nazism did nothing to stop the murder of millions and the defeat of the country in war.

    Here:
"I swear by God this sacred oath that to the Leader of the German empire and people, Adolf Hitler, supreme commander of the armed forces, I shall render unconditional obedience and that as a brave soldier I shall at all times be prepared to give my life for this oath."

Or if someone recites the Mexican pledge it aloud three times at midnight looking in a mirror, you become a La Raza agent.
