Medicare and Medicaid were in place by 1968. By the 1970s they began consuming more and more of the federal budget.

How does a GOP President get rid of entitlements if a Democrat Congress blocks him?

And I wonder if NASA's monopoly had more to do with national security. Can you imagine what the Soviets would have thought if a rocket had been launched from the US and the US government had not been able to account for it? It could have started WWIII.

At that time the only country in the world that could pull it off was the U.S. When JFK said we were going to the moon in ten years people thought he was nuts.

But with the support of the people he pulled it off. It was a matter of national pride.

We once had a thing called national pride in this country....We also had a lot more money.

No private company would have attempted it. If somene in the private sector would have even suggested it they woud have been fired as a lunatic.

I was so proud to be alive when man landed on the moon. Of all of mans history I lived through one of our greatest moments.

It was over national security but not for the reason you say. The US didn't want people looking down at the earth from satellites - mapping US bases, cities, transportation choke points such as the Suez Canal, watching troop and ship movements, etc. There is some justification for that type of restriction but the DoD and govt were also afraid to lose control. So there were restrictions on where a launch site could be located for "safety" reasons and to avoid technology transfer.

Of course now that the restrictions are somewhat off none of that bad stuff has happened. Instead we have everything from satellite based radio (like XM/Sirius) to private weather satellites to private mapping in multiple sensor types/frequencies (and BTW those maps are used by archaelogists to map ancient civilizations). Lots of innovation.

Wow I can't believe it, more agreement.

Any organization that becomes too powerful is inefficient, corrupt, and probably dangerous. It doesnt matter what the organization is, govt, bank, corporation. But the govt is more dangerous because it makes the rules and has the power of force.

I see the US govt as being far, far too big. It is grossly inefficient and corrupt.

I also see some corporations that are far, far too big. All the "too big to fail" companies for example.

Its even worse because the "too big to fail" companies have teamed with the too big govt. The resulting team is above the law and we are on the way to a ruling class.

The resulting team is all known and experienced old fashioned fascism. It is not like anything which is hapenning now has never happened before.

I would have to disagree - take News corp

    http://articles.cnn.com/2012-04-26/...orp-rupert-murdoch-media-magnate?_s=PM:EUROPE

And I will freely admit I have RM's guts and would happily like to see them staked out on an anthill but that is beside the point. There is no argument that Murdoch has used is influence to get people elected but the real difference is that we can only guess at the machinations Murdoch as undertaken whereas if he were a government we would have a better idea of exactly what he is up to and would be better equipped to counter it

When JFK started the Moon program, there was no Medicare or Medicaid gobbling up all the tax dollars.

Thats true enough, and there were also other factors involved. We were world leaders in manufacturing, had the highest standard of living, and we did not want the Russians to get the jump on us in anything.

Then LBJ. came along with his "Great Society" and people became dependant on government.

It helped a lot of people that needed it at the time, but then people understood that they could vote themselves government entitlements.

Now so many people depend on government handouts they vote for the person that will continue the gravy train and do not focus on any other issue.

Corporate America does the same thing...supports canidates to get what they want. They usually support both sides to insure they get their way.
    JMHO..

Yep. And Al Gore invented Internet.

Warmista seriously believe they have a clue as to what it takes to launch a vehicle into space; Where did they get there stability systems: What research did they do on nozzle design; and about materials and their ability to withstand the heat of re-entry.

By that logic if it were not for World War II we would never have rockets, atomic power or jet aircraft...........:)

Considering that NASA is considered a "warmista" group (just check out their website). They know quite a bit about stability systems, nozzle design, and about materials that withstand the heat of re-entry.

In fact, they probably know as much about it as anyone...they went to the Moon and came back.

I would advice you to check who invented Internet and items listed by warmista. Start from cardiac monitoring. I posted a link.

NASA warmista has 0 zero, zilch to do Moon or Mars landing.

Read the news about Mars landing. It is a marvel and an achievement of blue collar, hands on engineering (see the pics and videos), not white collar science.

Stop repeating non-sense imposed ion you by scientists - look, hear, trust your own eyes.

Considering the historical role war has played in advancing some technologies it becomes an even greater achievement that institutions like NASA have managed so much
