Anyone educated in american history understands what W. Virginia workers just gave up. Their grandfathers are rolling in their grave.

You must belong to a union. It seems to be working fine in South Carolina. A union tried to unionize Boeing, but the workers rejected them. Unions have outlived their purpose. It's now all about power and being an arm of the Democrat party.

And you would be wrong at night and during rainy and foggy days. WV broke off from Virginia to fight against slavery in the Civil War.

What is your reality ?? Obama has given us gov control over healthcare, "too big to fail" on steroids, the "executive action" on steroids as well, and the focus on global warming as the number one threat to the US in the world. He gave away the victory in Iraq by pulling all resources out resulting in ISIS. His economy will be the first to never have an annual gdp growth rate above 3% and his economy has resulted in an average per capita growth rate of ~ 1% (it should by double or triple that). Labor force participation is at levels not seen since the 70's and we have an atypical (for a non recessionary period) large difference between U6 and U3 umemployment.

Good idea; who cares about breathing in unhealthy air anyhow; after all we all have to die someday. So what kids with asthma can have attacks triggered by certain unhealthy air, that's their problem, not yours. Ever watch someone with emphysema trying to breathe? Pretty cool looking isn't it??? Just breathe nice and deep my friend!

It's all about maximizing profits in the big picture of things. The executives get larger bonuses and the shareholders get a few more pennies in their quarterly dividends. Big business does not give a hoot about the welfare of it's employees since there are plenty waiting to take their jobs.

So unions can't compete and have to rely on the government forced union membership...........then they deserve to be busted.

I've have been in two unions and in both I had to work for less than I was worth, what are you talking about? I call on major manufacturing through out the South and the vast majority non-union staff by labor that was paid less in union jobs that are no longer there.

So … You agree that any worker who does not want to be part of an organized union should not be allowed to receive the compensation and benefits that union negotiators have won … ???

"Right to work", is a great euphemism. It's right up there with candidates who "suspend" their failed campaigns and those who "misspeak" when they're caught lying.

However, any union worth its salt should never have to rely on some form of required union membership. I say that as a union member of 40 years and a full time union official for a few years. Closed shops make unions fat, lazy and corrupt. It also makes them ignore their members. Unions should work damn hard to get members and to keep them as members.

In Australia we have a union movement in decline. It misguidedly looked to the AFL-CIO for ideas on recruitment. That failed miserably. It's now confused about what it is, what it should be doing and how it should be doing it. Craft workers are no longer the backbone of the labour movement. Workers and work have changed but unions - at least some of them - still haven't woken up to it. As unions weaken employers will overreach and unions will come back again but in very different forms.

There should be no public-sector unions, government is not a business with the labor/employer synergy.

    FDR

"All Government employees should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service. It has its distinct and insurmountable limitations when applied to public personnel management. The very nature and purposes of Government make it impossible for administrative officials to represent fully or to bind the employer in mutual discussions with Government employee organizations. The employer is the whole people, who speak by means of laws enacted by their representatives in Congress. Accordingly, administrative officials and employees alike are governed and guided, and in many instances restricted, by laws which establish policies, procedures, or rules in personnel matters.

Particularly, I want to emphasize my conviction that militant tactics have no place in the functions of any organization of Government employees. Upon employees in the Federal service rests the obligation to serve the whole people, whose interests and welfare require orderliness and continuity in the conduct of Government activities. This obligation is paramount. Since their own services have to do with the functioning of the Government, a strike of public employees manifests nothing less than an intent on their part to prevent or obstruct the operations of Government until their demands are satisfied. Such action, looking toward the paralysis of Government by those who have sworn to support it, is unthinkable and intolerable. It is, therefore, with a feeling of gratification that I have noted in the constitution of the National Federation of Federal Employees the provision that "under no circumstances shall this Federation engage in or support strikes against the United States Government.""
    http://www.conservativeblog.org/amy...pposing-public-employee-government-union.html

    AFL-CIO President George Meany

"...4) Certain business leaders may consider "big government" or socialism more of an immediate threat to their interests than communism. Are they allowing themselves to be deluded by their own propaganda to the effect that organized labor in this country is in favor of big government or the nationalization of industry?
Nothing could be further from the truth. The main function of American trade unions is collective bargaining. It is impossible to bargain collectively with the government. Unions, as well as employers, would vastly prefer to have even Government regulation of labor-management relations reduced to a minimum consistent with the protection of the public welfare..."

No it's about reducing the cost of production so that their pricing is more competitive. Businesses definitely care about their employees. And are willing to compete with other companies to hire the best and brightest, i.e. the most productive.

Profitability is the signal with regard to creative destruction. If a product cannot be sold at a profit then the resources being used to produce that product are reallocated to other products. No central planners are required for this process to take place.

If you were so good as you claim, then why didn't the company pay you above scale? In my union, the wages are only the minimums they can pay you above scale if they so choose.

That's true; the vast majority of them care about their employees so much they close down shop and move out of country or slash wages/benefits while owners either maintain or increase their wages. I know, while it's never happened to me, i've seen it happen before to others.

That's in part the result of gov policies and the benefits of manufacturing in the countries in which products are consumed. Caterpiller, VW, and Toyota are examples of that.

the coal miners in west virginia had a small armed conflict with their employers until unions were formed to protect their labor rights and get paid fairly.
