The more I talk to friends about this topic the more I become aware that there are more people than expected who are having problems with basic reading and counting. Not that everybody has to be a scientist but there are a lot of illiterate people out there who have been able to hide it.

One can listen to books and there are programs for counting. (not to mention calculators) This is called progress. For instance, most of us do not understand Latin but our language was built on it. Whether that is 'good' or not is up for speculation I guess.

way off topic... I remember in 1st grade when I couldn't read and how helpless I felt when I opened up my reading book on the first day of school. I remember what the sentence said to this day because it was the very first sentence in the book.... "Bill saw Jill run" because a few weeks later, I remember seeing that same sentence and thought to myself "how could I not read that.... it's so easy"

crazy memory I have as I can remember stupid details like that (and this isn't the only thing)

Point is.... I remember the feeling of illiteracy. it was VERY helpless feeling

A few years ago I read one of those surveys asking random people questions like "What is 75% of 100?", "How many States in the United States?" and "If a roller skater travels six miles in one hour, how fast were they going?". Not quite believing the results, I began asking coworkers in different departments the same questions. The results weren't any better. People came up with all kinds of answers instead of the correct ones.

Now I hope I don't come off as I'm putting down people. Because it is embarrasing. But people have no reason to not even try to learn to read! It's 2014. The internet is everywhere! You can always enhance yourself. I wish people would at least try.

It seems people don't want to try. How can you progress without trying.

Why not solve for simple poverty and let market participants decide what is best for them and their dollars; we can call it Capitalism.

You may think that; but we are spending a lot of money on a War on Poverty for something that is allegedly fixed.

I believe we should lower our tax burden through simplification of public policies.

The concept of employment at will and unemployment compensation on that basis is very simple.

"Low income" is not the same as poverty.

Over 70 drop outs have become billionaires.

I've attended 5 universities and am still looking for my first million. LOL!

Of course I'm a musician and schooled musicians rarely make millions.
