Why do Americans value the ability to own a gun so much?

Especially since neither long arms nor full-auto weapons are responsible for a significant amount of the gun crime.

    I said:
" Why do we need to have people starve for progress? "
    You said:
"what progress? Stealing from others is a legitimate reason by itself. Gotcha wow, what progress we have. Seems we are sliding to 1939 Nazi Germany"
I saw that as you saying Germany was becoming an Anarchy. If I am mistaken, then excuse me.

So what you're saying is that they can't afford the cost of protection? Yeah, that does happen.

    Sure.

    Why would they do that?

So gun crime statistics are dependent on other factors than simply mass gun ownership? Who knew? Then why attack mass gun ownership when that clearly isn't the problem, as you've stated?

I can't for the life of me understand the great interest that non Americans have in US gun ownership. I get that you guys are scared of guns, fine, you not only don't have to have one, you're not allowed. Adults in the US who feel otherwise have options to own guns if they wish. Why do you guys have such an interest in telling us what to do and how to do it? It's not like we're trying to import gun ownership policies to your shores, so why harass us with your own personal preferences?

I'm always amused by watching the chronic nose pickers on the left wet their pants over civilians owning firearms.

The reason America needs guns, is that the Left is consistently trying to institute tyranny. Taking from others by force is what the Left is all about.

it was like that since before the ink dried on the DoI............. some from GB think we still belong to the Crown and the rest totally fail to understand Rights, because they have as serfs for generation upon generation.
Our Rights have never failed to be under fire by all Liberty haters, snipey little lice eggs.....

To take away? Firearms are needed for militia, to secure the free state, to fight against tyranny, according to the 2nd Amendment.

My wife would lose her job. She is required to staff hurricane shelters (as a school admin). Running is not an option. I do the other logical thing, which is prepare. Part of that is having non-perishable food and water. Part of that is having hurricane shutters. Part of that is having a shotgun.

I've never actually had to use a gun in those circumstances, it's primarily theoretical (as is my fire extinguisher). I have had to take the gun out and load it, but that's because I heard/saw looters in the neighborhood. they bypassed my house, but I was prepared. Other neighborhoods had armed patrols to keep them out of the neighborhood (not be vigilantes and illegally torture people like you claim Australians do). We will do that next time.

Are you having reading problems these days?

We are 111th out of 208 in intentional homicides.

War zones have lower intentional homicide rates, since war deaths are not counted per the UNODC in crime statistics.

Sorting the list in the link below by homicide rate, we are in the middle at 111 out of 218.

    Ok... source the actual fact.

I am not going to go dig for you in an effort to shot the perspective to pieces (pun intended).

    We get cyclones
    We also have shelters
We also have food and water prepared (as well as candles)
    We do not have shotguns

    Different outlook different culture

Silly me I was thinking of overall firearm mortality rates - not just intentional homicides

In the former the USA ranks 12th in the world

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate

Which is why you have a dearth of middle aged and older white men - you have lost so many to suicide

as I hear the laughter behind your post, thinking that something snarky and small goes unnoticed.....
unfortunately, YOUR suicide rates are higher. But you can lax, Japan has a much higher suicide rate than you. You just need to work harder to achieve their level of suicides.

don't forget to count the police who are responsible for a great number of unarmed deaths...seems socialist and pigs have one thing in common...they love an unarmed populace.....easier to kill the unarmed. Right? BB?

I'm curious as to why you believe the 'gun' causes these problems. A firearm is just a tool, it has no intelligence, it is the human behind the gun that causes the problem. Do you know history? How many wars were fought before the invention of the firearm? Swords, knives, bows...These are all tools that have been used to fight other wars...But they are not inherently evil...We as a species have become terribly efficient at killing, we've had too...Other predators on this planet have claws, fangs, are much stronger and faster than we are...So we have guns, we use these to protect ourselves from other predators...Whether that be a bear, cougar, tiger, or another human...Or the worst a government.

Guns don't cause "carnage" it's the person behind the gun that does. If not a gun you'll see a psycho drive over school children or possibly randomly stab people. Focusing on the health problems of these individuals is paramount and not removal of liberties of the citizens.
