Yes, we have placed our immigration policy in thedirty hands of the legal beagles,in tandem with the pathetic UN bureaucrats. And what a mess they have made of that policy.

I want our our sovereignty back!

The big problem we have got is the definition of refugee that our government is working with. It is a load of rubbish, almost anyone can fit the description and when you get a traitorous, blood sucking lawyer on the case (paid for by the good old Aus tax payers) the bureaucrats cave in in almost all but the most blatant cases of attempted immigration que jumping.

Compassion rubbish, they are no better than Welfare cheats, looking for the country with the best handouts available. The word has got around that this country is full of pollies that can easily be pushed and prodded by the leagal beagles and their 'hangers on.' Our pollies have proved they have no back bone.

Your comment reeks of racism. Welfare cheats? You think these poor people come over here for a god (*)(*)(*)(*)ed welfare cheque?

I just don't know what else to say to this. Where is the compassion?

    So who exactly is "they"?!?!

Are you talking about illegal immigrants, asylum seekers, or just anyone in general that has a slightly different coloured skin to you. Wanna be more specific?

We use the same definition of refugee that us and 146 other countries have been using since 1951.

I am sorry it doesn't meet your approval

No the people at the top are. But the people underneath are still committing a crime being poor doesn't excuse that. Unless they are forced to do it (some maybe, I don't deny that) they are guilty of people smuggling.

I can't really comment on that point as it was before my time and I don't want to make an ill-informed post.

However I would say that since those times don't we want asylum seekers getting here by safer means then boat?

Let them in by all means just do it off shore and save lives.

Moronic fiction, right there. Yes, they painstakingly pour over travel brochures and put on their Sunday best to make such fraught and perilous escapes from their ravaged countries. Your post reads like an uneducated clown.

Racist poophead, David Oldfield, called refugees: "Country Shoppers". You and he are clearly on the same page. Grotty, slimy page at that.

    Incorrect.

    Australia's immigration program doesn't have a 'queue', ... it has a quota.

They are not (*)(*)(*)(*)ing queue jumpers. To suggest such a thing is cruel. They are fleeing their countries, risking their lives for a better life!!! And the Liberals condemn them for daring to try and save their children, instead wanting to turn the boats around, and send these poor people back to a life of uncertainty!

A quota is the simply the means whereby a person becomes eligible to enter a queue. If a person bypasses that queue he/she is, by definition, a queue jumpers.

Dictionary definition of a queue 'a line of persons waiting their turn.'

The queue jumpers are the real cruel people. They are jumping ahead of those who have beep patiently waiting their turn, possibly for years. How can you justify such cruelty?

I despise queue jumpers, of any sort.

The notion that people who seek asylum in Australia have always been selected from a queue from those whose claims have been verified by the UNHCR is patently false, as no such queue exists. In fact, in Iraq and Afghanistan there are no queues to jump. Australia has no consular presence in these countries, by far our largest source of asylum seekers. Therefore there is no standard refugee process where people wait in line to have their applications considered. Few countries between the Middle East and Australia are signatories to the 1951 Refugee Convention, and as such, asylum seekers are forced to travel to another country to find protection. People who are afraid of their lives have been fleeing from the world’s most brutal regimes including the Taliban in Afghanistan and Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship in Iraq.

In any case, for several decades now Australia’s immigration program has had onshore and offshore components, which allowed people to seek asylum as refugees from outside as well as from within Australia. The offshore humanitarian component has been determined by various priorities and criteria established by the Australian government.

In other words Australia has “picked/chosen” who it wanted and it certainly has not been on the basis of their place in a “queue”. It is therefore duplicitous to talk of asylum seekers depriving more deserving refugees languishing in refugee camps around the world.

The only queue jumping that occurs in relation to Australia’s immigration program is a direct consequence of the uneven distribution of its overseas immigration staff. Consequently, from a global perspective, immigrants are not processed in the order that they apply to migrate to Australia. Some are able to “jump the queue” if they apply from countries which have a
    disproportionate share of these staff.

    There is no queue.

Australia does have a queue, a very long queue, being grossly distorted by those who have no sympathy or regard for those patiently waiting in that queue. I am sure those in that queue would really appreciate your sympathy.

Dictionary definition of a queue 'line of person waiting their turn to be attended'. And you pretend there is no queue!

Since you haven't quoted your sources,I don't know where you trolled this information from, but it reads like an illegal migration manifesto.

We must have the sovereign right to choose who comes into this country, and not be encumbered by the decsions of some distant offcial sitting comfortably in their sinecure seat at the UN.

Asylum seekers are not illegal immigrants. Stop trying to confuse the two issues.

    http://www.phaa.net.au/documents/int_health_asylum_seekers.pdf

The truth, however, is that very often there is no queue for people to jump. In many countries, there is no formal process for applying for visas to leave their country. In some parts of the world, there are no embassies to contact, no refugee camps to arrive at and seek asylum. As Peter Mares (Borderline, 2001, p. 19) writes "the selection of refugees for resettlement is more like a lottery than an orderly process". For many people, the only option is to leave their country in great haste and arrive in a country they wish to seek asylum in. They have no opportunity to apply for a visa to visit Australia. It also needs to be re-stated; that a refugee is a person who is outside their own country, so to be considered as an applicant for refugee status, a person must first leave their country.

Asylum seekers who arrive in Australia by boat are neither engaging in illegal activity, nor are they
    immigrants.

The idea that boat people are “queue jumpers” is based on misconceptions about how Australia’s Refugee Program and the international refugee resettlement system actually work.

Sadly the absurd notion of the 'queue jumping' asylum seeker continues to be used by Australian politicians and still resonates with sections of the public. In speeches to the Upper House last week Senators Bernardi and Fielding both denounced asylum seekers who were wiling to 'jump the queue' in order to get to Australia.
