Abuse will happen whether you give permission for paddling or not.

Actually in regards to fights you're pretty typical. :shrugs: Most kids in school haven't experienced fights. LINK: Physical Fighting by Youth - Child Trends

Physically imposing ones self is not necessarily a bad thing. For instance physically imposing yourself between someone trying to assault another is actually considered a good thing and one is not charged with battery, assault, or even violent assault for doing so. What matters is whether your intention is to cause harm or to create a beneficial effect. Imposing yourself between someone who wants to cause harm against someone else is about creating a beneficial effect, not harm... though you may certainly have to cause just enough harm in order to create that beneficial effect. The same goes for spanking. You use it as a last resort. And you use it just enough to create something beneficial.

Would you mind rephrasing? Not sure where you're getting this from?

My high school used corporal punishment. It certainly kept students in line. It should have been more popular.

    What a sad thread.
There are those here I can’t persuade that it is wrong on so many levels for big people to hit little people.
A depressing number of people think it’s OK to do so.
I will leave it there, simply as one person saying it’s all so weird to me that such mindsets exist.
    Oh well.

many that were abused by nuns as children would disagree with you

many had problems with the knuckles in adulthood from the abuse

but hey, the church played down child molestation too

How close in mass do people have to be for you not to get all upset about that?

Well I would probably cite the size of the average adult over 18 against the size of the average 13 or 14 year old girl or boy.
We have been over this ground anyway haven't we, when I posed the question what happens if the little person hits back?

And I've answered. You neutralize them (and not with a weapon, the suggestion of a TASER is pure idiocy).

As a substitute high school teacher I occasionally reminded students that the laws and rules do no permit corporate punishment but they say nothing about capital punishment. Seemed to work until one smarty reminded me that you cannot inflict capital punishment without some corporal punishment. Doesn't really address your point, but I thought it cute!

I remember corporate punishment being common through junior high (many moons ago) and more helpful and effective than not. I don't recall any student being seriously traumatized by it. In fact it was kind of a badge of honor for some. I don't recall any administrator (who predominately administered it, not the teacher) doing it in front of a parent though; that seems beyond the pale.

I did not suggest a taser earlier, but enquired as to how the smaller person can be ‘neutralised’, from memory without scrolling back I think the suggestion was to choke them.

What are your thoughts on scaring a child to get them to behave?

Are you asking that in good faith?

If you are, then to me you shouldn’t be deliberately scaring children.
Unfortunately you are also asking rather a philosophical question about ‘behaving’.
Sheesh, I am thinking of an example.
A parent says to a child ‘fetch my slippers’, the child doesn’t do so, so the parent suddenly and unexpectedly shouts ‘FETCH ME MY SLIPPERS AND BEHAVE YOURSELF...do as you’re darn well told or you’ll be eaten by a monster/sent away to a children’s home/ get paddled’.
    Is the child misbehaving?
    Is it obviously so?
The preacher in the clip above suggested a questioning child was too clever for their own good and punched him.
I would suggest that in the preacher’s mind he was thinking ‘this child should ‘behave’ in the presence of God’ and to the preacher that justified the assault.
‘Behaviour’ might be defined by law, or perhaps by School Rules, but the usual arbitrary adult child interaction is often decided by the ‘because I say so!’ imperative, and any concept of due process is ignored by the adult.
To me it is the angry, or impatient, or unreasonable adult who uses violence as a short cut.
    Like that preacher.
Now there are folk who will disagree with me, but nevertheless I have stated my position.
I don’t think big people should have licence to assault small people simply because they can.

So, you're against things like boot camp for troubled kids?

Which one is worse? 3 swats to the butt or the above?

Can't a school be sued nowadays for hitting someone's kid?

Well if corporal punishment isn't a big deal, why is it a problem doing it in front of a parent?

You don't think you're being a bit naïve here? I mean really? Most Kids with no fear of retribution for their actions are unmanageable. Spanking a child instills a cost for an action. Is it better to spank a child who refuses to listen when you tell them not to cross the street or better to have them run over?

How many school shootings and teacher assaults were going on prior to everyone gets a trophy and ending corporal punishment? We now have a society of full grown brats who feel entitled as they have never learned the cost of bad decisions. Is it better to spank them as a child or jail them as a felon because they still believe they have a right to do what they want?
