Actually its her supporters who are unable to understand basic rules of evidence ,or if the posts in this thread are any indication then understanding of even any simple rules of law are also lacking.[/quote]

Nonsense, and this statement proves the fact of your own ignorance. The truth is irritating sometimes isnt it?

"Globally, drug use is not distributed evenly and is not simply related to drug policy, since countries with stringent user-level illegal drug policies did not have lower levels of use than countries with liberal ones."

Punishment doesn't stop crime. Fair, just and reasonable societies are what stop crime.

Drug abuse is a multi faceted animal.

There is Alcohol and Tobacco by far the most abused and quiet acceptable. ... but that's changing.

There is prescription or "over the counter" drug abuse. Secreted away, protected, growing.

There is the Prohibited Substance drug abuse, this is what I am talking about.

The victims, yes they are victims, are sick. They are usually children, and it is usually a sickness they have caught or been exposed to. They catch it because we have been negligent in removing the dangers, in not having the time to understand, and to appreciate it for what it is. It is the product of our societies sickness.

Making it illegal and placing inhuman penalties on people, who are usually the victims, whilst protecting people who are really the main cause of the illness.

Maybe we need a Walk in their Shoes Day. Occasionally I watch undercover boss, and I watched the one about boat people.

It is crystal clear that it makes a difference if we take the time to flip the coin over. Every boss was amazed at what they learnt and I know from experience that often there is more company loyalty among the lower echelons then there is amongst management.

Not everyone is unemployed because they are too lasy to find a job, not everyone is homeless because they are useless, not everyone is a drug user because they are criminals, not everyone involved in drug trafficking is evil.

The organisers are yes, but those that have been trapped, enslaved by it, used by those animals that profiteer of the misfortunes of others are not.

I have walked if not with then among most parts of society and have found that those we think are the cleanest are the dirtiest, they just have more garbage bins.

When young I rebelled, joined a biker group spent 4 years there. Later I joined the army where I remained for 6 years an obtained the rank of corporal and was an amoured vehicle crew commander. Before and after the army I worked in Kings Cross, doing various things from the good to the dubious. My first stint was just after the Vietnam war and the R&R days when the cross would be full of military personnel on shore leave.

Here I lived worked loved and played in the underbelly of Sydney.

During my military service I met my true love, the military life didn't suit me and marriage so I left. I went to uni, obtained a degree, bought a home (mortgage) and settled down to a normal family life.

Cancer took her away at 36 and left me with young children and a gap in my employment history of 6 years, my home had been repossessed so I set out to start again.

I moved back to Sydney and got a job with an area health service where I worked for 10 years until I had a mental collapse from trying to work in such a screwed bureaucracy.

Now I walk softly, I listen carefully and I say my piece. If stirred enough I will jump up and down and wave my arms and shout. But I'm old and disgruntled and will take no S@#T from anyone.

    What a load of crap.
She was found GUILTY on the strength of the evidence AGAINST her and therefore should be left to ROT in that jail. She did the crime and must pay her dues for it. Yes she would have got a lighter sentence her in Aus BUT the CRIME was committed of there not here.

I beg to differ, Asian countries with severe penalties have a correspondingly low level of crime. Singapore is an example I will use because most people will be familiar with their caning policy. Extremely safe place, extremly low level of crime.

Well, isnt that interesting....heres a guy that criticises me, suggesting what I said was a load of crap...but he condones caning....Im sure that everyone would agree with him, and we should advocate that criminals be caned....not that its barbaric, or anything like that...maybe we should also give stoning
    a try...that seems to work....

And I get criticised...maybe you could do the caning Ian....

Its the laws and punishments which are being discussed so you cannot use the excuse 'she was found guilty so there'!! For me even deliberate supply of drugs is nothing more then tax avoidance.... unless its supplied to children which should be illegal in the same way as alcohol - so in that regard her punishment is way over the top and especially so since their is a good amount of doubt as to her actual knowledge and intent.

Whether she is guilty or not is not relevant. The sentence she received is ridiculous. When a terrorist responsible for the murders of 200+ people receives a lighter sentence than someone who (allegedly) committed what is mainly a victimless crime, really shows you how warped and (*)(*)(*)(*)ed up the Indonesian justice system is.

Not really..some people think it would be better to hang ALL CONVICTED drug smugglers.

Maybe so BUT he will die in jail so the right outcome will be achieved

People should not be executed for drug smuggling. It is hardly the worst of crimes. Terrorism is probably the worst.

We don't know if Abu Bakar Basir will die in jail. That depends if he lasts that long - and with remissions, he'll be out early anyway!

Remember how the terrorists got remissions but Schapelle didn't because she had a mobile phone in her cell? Indonesia seems to favor terrorists over people who commit minor offenses.

the point is that it IS a CRIME and she got found GUILTY of said CRIME and now has to pay the price for it.

So she should get REWARDED for breaking the rules??? She had a mobile while in JAIL and thats a big no no..

What you said was a load of crap. Whether or not I condone corporal punishment is entirely irrelevant to that fact.

Maybe we would have less drugs if we hung all the narrow minded, uncaring, selfish fools that say garbage like this. Well it would be a 100 times better world anyway.

Most of the smugglers are as big as victims as anybody, and not necessary from drugs, but from a heartless society that sweeps souls aside for profit.

    And from ignorant people ....

    The Daily Blah

Headlines: The Bank of High Charges has announced a quarterly drop in profit of 102 million from 14 billion to well a little bit less but still 14 billion.

The CEO Joe Imalrightmate announced that regrettably the board has decided to close it's manufacturing plant in Australia, and have all it's products manufactured on Slave Island.

He forecasts that it will save the company around 200 million. He says he feels empathy with his staff as he too has had to take a cut. He was to receive a raise of 20 million this quarter, but to help he has dropped that to 19,900,000 and added a further 100 thousand dollars this quarter alone.

The government regret the lose of 5000 jobs but say they understand, will give the company a further 150000 to help. Those made redundant will of course be offered assistance from the government.

After 13 weeks and as long as they have less then 8000 in the bank we will give them the dole while they find another job if they can, a government spokesman promised.

....... 2 weeks later in a small flat in Blacktown.

"What do you mean you can't afford my year 10 ball Dad, you promised.."

"You said you were working for me your little girl, oh I hate you you liar"

"Hey I hear your oldies are too tight to pay for your formal too sista"

"Yeah, dad says because mum got laid off he has to tighten his belt, yeah he does, big fat gut, maybe if he drank less beer"

"Hey sista, a few friends are getting together, we are meeting behind the bus stop near the venue, your welcome to come"

"Sure, the oldies won't give a s@#t see you there then, thanks"

"WOW, there is a lot here"

"Hey hi sista, glad you could come. Come and meet this real cool guy, I know he's a bit old, like 20 something, but he's cool, and hey, he has these pills that will give us our own party, and he's so stupid, he will give you some LOL"

Sorry, thats crap. The smugglers are people who have little regard for their fellow human beings and care only about making a quick and easy buck. The vast majority of them have nothing to offer society except a drain on resources.

    The Daily Blah

Headlines: A seventeen year old girl from a small flat in Blacktown has been arrested in Bali .... she is due to be taken out, tied to a post, and shot by a military firing squad. This reporter went to her mother's home and asked her "How do you feel about this?"

In other stories, the retired billionaire Joe Imalrightmate flatly denies allegations that he knowingly had people importing prohibited narcotics out of Asia. It was found that he had a massive gambling habit and with poker machines in every corner it became to much for him. The judge said he understood and made him pick up papers in the playground at lunch time.

    Now for sport ....

Hey my age number is one more today then it was yesterday.

Does this mean I'm wiser, or more senile?
