LIfe expectancy in 1957 was less than 67 years. Today it's almost 80. Judging how happy people are based on an arbitrary set of numbers is pure nonsense. Women who wanted to have a career weren't happier. Nor were minorities, or gays or the elderly who were sick and had no money.

But I do see a point in believing that this is not a happy time for the U.S. The "happiness index" is not a "perfect" indicator, but it's much better than just taking random statistics. And even though there isn't a long history of data, it's clear that in the short time it has been kept, we went from the highest in 2015 and 2016, to now at an all time low.
