I'm very aware of the costs associated with producing energy. And the costs of producing renewable energy has steadily fallen over the last two decades.

Nope most of them have their own back up generator capacity. The nature of the work makes it a priority.

Damn those kids and their new fangled automobiles, you can feed a horse anywhere, but where you going to find gas ... duh ...
Americans are pretty resourceful at solving production and distribution problems - only Russian internet trolls doubt that ability.

I love fossil fuel! A little salt and horseradish, yum.

    Slow day?

I live in a place that gets hurricanes. You plan for emergencies. You should have a back-up generator or wood stove. Diversification
has always been a key to survival.

I have both. My generator runs on gasoline and so does my chain saw used to cut wood. I do split my firewood the old fashioned way. If you live in an urban area a major electrical outage is potentially going to cause sewage pumping stations to fail with sewage backing up into homes regardless if people have generators.

But one of the biggest keys to survival in an emergency is of course a firearm as demonstrated by Katrina.

Actually, with climate change increasing, it may become a lot more common.

It would be nice to have a Model T Ford which could run on alcohol. A little corn mash, firewood, and a still, and you have energy independence. Plus they were good off road vehicles.

Responsible gov officials would have planned ahead for situations like this. The problems is the a*******s are more concerned about lining their pockets, and little about serving the peoples needs.

If over all the globe is warming how can we have record breaking low temperatures? The low temps and the high temps should be on an upward slope in parallel.

No more record lows would EVER be recorded again.

There is a very good article appearing 0n MSN today describing in detail the severe problems affecting Texas today as millions have lost their heating source during this extreme cold weather. As with most things in our infrastructure, it boils down to the fact that we do not modernize and upgrade most of our infrastructure in the country, we instead choose to respond only when we experience a breakdown crisis, and even then we o;nly do the bare minimum to fix the problem.

Oil subsidies are basically a depletion allowance same as the miners get for the Steel for the wind turbine base. Same as they get for mining rare Earth's for solar panels. They are dwarfed by green energy subsidies. Elon Musk would have gone out if business two decades back without green energy subsidies.

So you can't show them? Money is money. I'm betting the oil companies get more.

It also completely sweeps under the rug that without a multi-trillion dollar complete overhaul and revamping of power generation and distribution, 300 million cars taking from 8 to 14 hours to recharge every night after a couple of hundred miles is a pipe dream beyond comprehension.

But so called renewable energy still cost more to produce than a coal fired power plant.

Dont worry about oil. We like cheap power from coal fired power plants.

If they don't prepare for a storm hat hits every 50 years, then they are pretty short sighted. I have relatives in Houston and they are suffering because of the black outs.

We get blackouts out here in the country at least twice per year. They result from having an amateur power company with old equipment. Rarely do they last for more than a couple of days. It is what it is.

You realize that this is not an issue with wind or solar power but a planning and logistics problem. Wind and solar power are successfully used in many European countries that are much colder and get a lot more snow than Texas.
