    Hey!

    I use Ghostery, which is a browser add-on that detects web trackers. I never got warnings from Ghostery about pf in the past, but today I did. What the hell is facebook connect and why is it needed here?

    just askin'

    <!--begin facebook 1 of 2-->

    <div id="fb-root"></div>

    <script>(function(d, s, id) {

    var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];

    if (d.getElementById(id)) return;

    js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id;

    js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1";

    fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);

    }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));</script>

    <!--end facebook-->

    <!-- begin facebook -->

    <fb:like-box href="http://www.facebook.com/PoliticalForums" width="292" height="65" show_faces="false" border_color="black" stream="false" header="false"></fb:like-box>

    <!-- end facebook 2 of 2 -->

    I copied the code suggested by Facebook, to put a Like button the index page. I don't see how that could cause a problem. You just choose to Like or ignore it.

    as I understand it , PoliticalForum & PoliticalForums are now the same ?

    and on FaceBook . . . well , does that mean that we're all on FB now ?

    can everyone on FB read our posts ?

    Hate to tell you this, but every Tom, Dick and Harry can read our posts on this forum. It is a public forum where if you do the right search you will get a thread from this forum as a result. Try it. Find a thread, copy an unusual phrase from it and put that with quotes into a search engine. If there are only a handful of results then this forum should be one of them.

    Example "I use Ghostery, which is a browser add-on that detects" (this is from the OP of this thread) Result.

    As I understand it, didn't know there were 2, one with an 's'. ???

    Only if you visit PF's FB page.

    No, but if you write on their 'wall' everybody here can read about your Aunt Mildred's gall bladder operation from your FB page. Hope you don't mind. :|

    If this is true, and I have no reason to doubt you, then it's the stupidest move they could have made.

    That's not the point. The point is mixing people's personal information with their posts on a political forum. Do you honestly not see a problem with that?

    PF ID: ConservativesRpigs
    FB ID: Harold Liberalham, graduate of John Wilkes Booth High School, works at Acme Industries in Podunk, West Virgina... married with 3 children, Harold Jr., 10; Betty Ann, 6; Fred, 3 months... wife enjoys tennis and mud wrestling... etc., etc., etc.

    Stupid move. Only morons will post on PF/FB if they have personal FB accounts. It's dangerous to put yourself out there like that.

    Dangerous how? I post about politics all the time on FB. I suppose some wacko *Mod Edit* could track me down but it's more dangerous crossing the road.

    Nix the Facebook thingy then.

    Why is it needed? I didn't sign up here 3 years ago to have it all plastered on Facebook.

    A PF member posted on PF FB page last night and got a rep here from someone using her real name.

    That's asking for trouble.

    A mod said he would advise the owner to tweak the connection so this isn't possible... but since we haven't heard, must presume nothings been changed.

    Gotta FB account with pics of your wife & kiddies? Why don't YOU go post on the PF/FB and let us know what happens?

    How about this. If you are worried about privacy, don't post on PF's facebook page.

    Is that really that hard?

    What could happen? Most use their real names on Facebook and pseudonyms here.

    Maybe you should post a sticky about the Facebook feature. Or maybe one has been posted and I've just missed it? So far I've heard different reasons why it exists in the first place. Is it a backup site in case this forum goes down? That's the latest I've heard.

    I agree... people who are concerned with privacy shouldn't post on PF's facebook page.

    It's just they won't know they need to be concerned with privacy until it's too late.

    What's a person to do??? :|

    I just provided an example of that very scenario a few posts back... where were you?

    As far as I can figure Facebook connect is a way to sign into Facebook and have an instant link. It has nothing to do with the PF FB page per se.

    Facebook already has tons of privacy issues. If you don't want to share or have something to hide be careful what you post, or put on your profile. Adjust your settings so only friends can view your profile or posts, or make them private. However, it is the internet, and people should have realized this long before Facebook.

    Then again, if we all knew each other we'd probably be a lot more civil.

    Someone got a reputation point and that's bad how?

    (they most likely posted their photo here and it was recognized.)

    You're right not to be concerned, Sly. It's very doubtful anybody would go to the trouble to find the real you. :bored:

    Its happened to me personally by a flea bagger from your side. And I didn't put myself out there. A mod on another forum gave them my IP and they harassed myself and my family through mail. I could never get my hands on them but you are a fool if you think it can't happen.

    Well, the long & short of it -- most people prefer to keep their private information private. Six year olds are taught not to share personal info with strangers. That's not advice you outgrow... if you're smart.

    You all just need to look into your privacy settings on facebook, and if you don't even have facebook, you got nothing to worry about. You can control what people can see on your profile, whether they're your friends, or just random people searching your name. You have nothing to worry about IF your smart about it. Check it out. I dropped you all my real name last night. Search me on facebook. Since none of you are my friends, all you're gonna see is where and when I graduated from college, my pic (which isn't even me), and my subscription to Weird NJ.

    You're all really blowing this thing way out of proportion.

    well now Sir Thaddeus , it's more complicated than that , at least it is for me .

    If PF & PFs & FB are in the process of being linked together , then that's prolly part of the upgrades being implemented by the PF Owner . .it may be a great feature once we all get used to it and learn the ropes , or , maybe not . I don't know , just trying to sort it all out , and any help you can give , I'd sure appreciate it .

    The issue for me is that I have family members that are on FB every day . .I spend a lot of time here on PF and not on FB , mainly because of the enormous amount of spamers on FB , and they've had a lot of security issues of late .

    I'm not concerned about myself as much as I am the privacy of my family members . they don't post on PF , and I'd not want to be embarrased myself or see them embarrased or harassed .
