For those expecting herd immunity: this study kinda buries that possibility.

You are correct. I believe it’s typical for antibodies from viral infection to decrease by 90% in a years time. Essentially the OP is fear of normal viral immune response. As the last sentence of the OP link states, memory T cell longevity is not addressed. The interactions of B and T memory cells to facilitate long term immunity is still not fully understood, but we know enough to say basing long term immunity projections on the OP’s premise is certainly wild speculation if not plain wrong.

With natural immunity only lasting a short period it does not argue well for a viable long lasting vaccine

We may have to “blitz” the vaccine to get a large number of immunities to limit spread that way then go back to controlling and contact tracing to manage it

Unless the immune system “forgets” the virus

A cursory survey of Google indicates to me that the immune system never forgets except that measles can wipe out the immunological memory for all previously encountered diseases and certain genetic defects that can impair the mechanism.

I suspect this whole thread is much ado about nothing.

And why is that? You don't want to get rid of it for some reason?

That's the entire purpose of boosters, isn't it?

The problem with the flue vaccine is that we don't know what strain of flu will be the most prevalent by the time flue season hits. COVID is already with us. Though we may never develop a vaccine at all, so it may well be with us permanently.

That's because there isn't really such thing as "the common cold." Not as a specific disease. "Cold" is a catch-all for many kinds of infections. COVID-19 is one thing.

My point was that vaccines can't necessarily just be whipped up on demand like a Starbucks latte.

If you thought that, tell me why they still don't have vaccines for the common cold, or AIDS, despite decades of research.

I think not. Vaccines are not as effective as naturally acquired immunity and don't create very good memory of antibodies.

The covid virus is just one of a family of similar viruses. The common cold is actually caused by one of dozens of different kinds of viruses, all with similar symptoms. Covid is the simpler problem.

That is true, but it is also true that covid is in that same family with the common cold.

Which doesn't make the promise of a vaccine seem too promising.

    Oooof!

the article on measles is valid and interesting but your other two links? One is to a generic page on the encyclopaedia Brittanica and thanks for the academic equivalent of pointing to a map of Australia and telling me there is a polar bear somewhere on the continent - not doing your homework for you

finally - Quora?? Really?? Why not a more valid site like “mybumissoredotcom

I know it is difficult to find anything in the field of immunology that is simple and easy to understand so why not look at what sites like the CDC says

    https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp/conversations/downloads/vacsafe-understand-color-office.pdf

So, it is indeed the case that the body retains knowledge of how to quickly make antibodies for diseases it has already encountered.

Why don't you just admit you didn't know this and move on instead of trying to high-hat me? That is the sort of thing that almost-smart people do.

No because you are very wrong

what I admitted is that there is sod all easy to explain information on what is a horrendously complex science

But I do know this - if our immune system did not “forget” some diseases there would be no need for vaccine boosters

Actually, one of my articles explained why one needs vaccine boosters and how naturally acquired immunity is much more effective.

And the important point is that antibodies always disappear but can be regenerated. That corona virus antibodies disappear is no big deal.

On another topic, I notice that Australia has dropped the ball and COVID infections are back up close to the peak. Oh, well, your strategy has come a cropper.
