Well, the party's changed drastically over the last 50 years. Depending on your age, you may have voted for/supported Humphrey, McGovern, Carter, Mondale and such, and those gents are much farther left than the Clintons - reptilian conservatives who took the party hard to the right.

The phrase "neoconservative" wasn't coined during the 1960's. Neoconservatives were liberals with in the Democratic party who left the party starting in the early 1970's when the radical left (New Left) started hijacking the Democratic party. The New left coined the phrase "neocon" referring to liberals who opposed Communist expansion in the world and wanted to continue fighting the Cold War while the "New Left" surrendered and opposed fighting the Cold War and sided with the Soviet Union. Most liberal neoconservatives came under the GOP tent during the 70's and early 80's. Going back almost a hundred years the Republican party has always been the minority party. The only time a Republican was elected to serve as President it was Democrats who put the Republican into the White House. Remember the Reagan Democrats ? While liberals (real liberals) started to flee the Democratic party while the radical left took control of the Democratic party, many center of the road Democrats also started to abandoned the Democratic party starting in the mid 1970's. Today they are known as independents.
