Why do people have such a problem accepting that US weapons can be hit? If you produce top of the line war machines then guess what the target will be for everyone else? I guarantee no admiral was saying "oh this will never happen" with an undetected sub surfaced close to a carrier. It's like the F-22. Yes it's a powerful weapon, but in training the red force simply targeted refuelers. Guess what plane isn't flying without fuel. Point is that if you cannot admit weakness you cannot improve on it and you will fall. Weapons technology is an ever evolving art and the defense is always lagging. It's knowing your weaknesses and playing your strengths that gets you ahead, not blunt force and denial.

Germany was treated unfair after WW I. WW II as a gigantic payback. And it seems it teached our enemies the lesson, otherwise we would not rule europe today. We did not depend on "welfare". Germany was rebuild because discipline, endurance and its hard working people.

And, of course, CVBG's have the most basic defense against non-nuclear submarines: speed. A Nimitz-class CV can top 40 knots. A conventional-powered sub does well to hold a sustained 7 knots. (Even a nuke will top out at ~15 knots unless running from something...faster, they start making lots of noise.)

Short: Our military structure was not important for us during the cold war, because in all scenarios of all nations in the world Germany would had been always only a nuclear hell. Indeed our own army makes also today not a big sense - and indeed our weapons are completly normal - nothing special. And Germany itselve is still today completly under control of the US-army. Germany is also not souvereign state - what you can see very good, because we were not able to give asylum to Mr. Snowden and even if we had done so, we had no chance to protect Mr. Snowden - a single person - with all our might against the USA. And our most famous german companies are by the way in most cases international companies and not german companies.

Why should we change anything? We are used to live with traitors. It's a little strange that the USA is a foreign nation - that's all.
