So how do you want to restrict freedom of the press?

No, he is not. What I cannot understand is why anyone would give a (*)(*)(*)(*) about the royal family. They have no actual power, and should have been executed hundreds of year ago.

Cats you may be jumping the gun here. You have no evidence to suggest that she killed herself because of that prank. It may well of been the old straw that broke the camels back, but I would imagine, and certainly hope that this women didn't take her own life, leaving children behind, just because of one prank call. I would think that there is far more to this.

    Not being fair Cats !

The so called "freedom of the press" does NOT repeat NOT include phoning wards pretending to be relatives and YES it has happened to me. Think about he impact on patient care of this - means we not only cannot be will not give out information over the phone about a patient - even if you are living on the other side of the world to your loved one. Imagine if your child was in ICU in Australia and you rang to find out how they were and all I could tell you was "satisfactory condition". This is the outcome of your vaunted "freedom of the press"

Even if it were the straw that does not excuse what they did!! Nurses are nurses because we CARE and because we care things like this can hit hard

First of all, this entire prank has nothing to do with freedom of the press. But you have some sort of hostility to the concept of freedom of the press. Why is that?

Because I am a nurse and have been on the receiving end of this sort of thing - press ringing the ward pretending to be relatives and trying to get information from nurses. Because of this we have often had to put severe and strict rules in place about giving out information over the phone - only to be abuses, and yes I do mean abused by people because we will not give out said information

That's fair enough, however to blame them for her death is not only premature but also irresponsible considering we have no facts on the situation.

To an extent I agree but I know what was going through this girl's head - she would have been chewed out, if not by her bosses then her colleagues. Unfortunately nurses do "eat their young" indulge in lateral violence/passively accept workplace bullying it seems to come with the territory and believe me she would have "copped it" for being "sucked in" and probably felt her life and career were over. I have seen it before, which is why I am so angry

So going off what you said, who is to blame ? Ignorant radio jocks or an industry that eats its own ?

I think there is more to this. You don't go off yourself leaving two kids behind because you got some flack from work colleagues.

That's what I think as well, it doesn't matter where you stand in terms of your belief, or whether you are black or white or yellow, if you enjoyed a proper upbringing you know what's right or wrong, and where to start and where to stop...........
    No point in blaming others!

If you think workplace bullying is "some flack" then you have never been subject to it. It is a cancer that eats the self esteem and self assurance of those who are the targets

Oh come on. You would have to be brain dead not to have known it was a joke, and the nurse should have done her job and not assumed she was speaking to the Queen. It was obvious it was a joke. Are they so dumb as to not know that the accents were terrible?

People need to lighten up. It was a joke, and everyone knows you don't just assume you are speaking to Joe Blow when it could be anyone, and the nurse should have been more cautious when it came to the Royal family.

That said, the DJ's had nothing to do with that nurses death. She chose to take her own life, and we don't even know why, yet we assume it had something to do with the prank.

It was a bit of fun, and Brits need to stop whinging about it!!

well it has come out that there has been no such thing..... Apparently.

again I will say that there is much more to this than it seems.

    Mak,
most often I share your views, not this time round.
Because of a bit of fun a mother of two takes her own life, within days of this *only a joke* phone call. Only coincidence?

Hah! Whoever said that has never worked in ICU

Know the difference between an ICU nurse and a Pitbull Terrier? Pitbull's don't wear lipstick

Mak when you get weekly abuse from people about wanting inside information about "their" relative and you have to keep repeating that you cannot give out that information over the phone then it is an issue

We have to be understanding that the person at the other end of the line is distressed but you would not believe some of the abuse we get

She killed herself over a prank? That was pretty dumb if that is the reason why and leaving her children without a mother...don't you think? Obviously for her to leave her own children to suffer for the rest of their lives knowing that their own mother killed herself for something so silly as this, what example is that leaving for her own children?...there was more to it than this stupid prank.

There is no need to restrict anything if we act with a certain decency, holding some values....
