My point was about the legal, not the civil. There are data protection laws in play here and I would have expected broadcasting laws too. That is just about the call to the hospital, the release of patient information and the broadcasting of the recording. It has absolutely nothing to do with the unfortunate death of the nurse.

I agree.

Nobody causes suicide. It's an extreme personal response to a major psychological or mental disturbance.

I disagree that patient confidentiality is a minor issue. I see no reason to play it off against a suicide though, and find all the attempts to do so distasteful. They're two quite separate issues and should be treated as such.

"The Kingdom" didn't do anything of the sort. Most of the guilt was, somewhat ironically, encouraged by the media in the UK and Australia though I suspect that everyone at the radio station involved in the incident will have felt an element of guilt and responsibility for the nurses death, however irrational that might be. That's just human nature.

Nothing the station presented on that day constitutes any form of freedom of the press. They contributed to the death of a mother/wife who was only trying to do her duty and to help feed her family. All stations should be enjoined form pulling this type of stunt before anyone else gets hurt.

We ought to have equal concern for the privacy of all citizens and this particular breach of privacy does not warrant particular consideration in a political forum in my opinion.

If we have genuine concern for good laws being upheld well then it is more in the British and commonwealth countries like Australia's interest that a republic revolution against the monarchy be organised and treating the royals with less regard and consideration under the law would be appropriate. For example, the law against killing people could be set aside (as it is in war) to allow the assassination of the royals to provoke a republican revolution. If the murder law can be set aside in the case of the royals then the privacy laws can be also.

Only when the royals are dead and gone can we expect to have quality governments, judges and justice established in those countries where the Queen is now monarch. If you support law then help overthrow the royals. If you support the royals, you are against all good law.

Suicide bombers are caused by Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

Certain people are very easily suggestible and the UK TV suggests 24/7 that it is intolerable for its viewers if the royals don't get special consideration and protection and no doubt those messages are reinforced by that hospital which has royal patients from time to time - telling them that the nursing staff must ensure the royals are given special consideration.

It doesn't have to be in the dead nurses' contract that she explicitly had to take her life for that to be a conclusion for a suggestible person like her to come to - a way of punishing herself for what she believed she had done wrong.

By "the kingdom", I include media people in other countries who take part in the global brainwashing of the people to support the royals. So I include people like Daine Sawyer - the anchor of America's ABC World News - who led her news bulletin with news of the royal pregnancy - in the wide category of those media professionals who act as agents for the kingdom.

The kingdom however is not an inevitable result of human nature. Kingdoms rise and they fall and republics arise in their place.

The kingdom having influence - and whether the radio station feels responsible for the death - are both matters of political leadership. At the moment the royalists of the kingdom are winning the political argument - the radio station has been guilt-tripped by the kingdom into making a large cash payment.

So long as the kingdom wins political arguments then the death, destruction and missed opportunity that is a consequence of the kingdom will continue. I will continue to oppose the evil kingdom because that is in my nature.

British nurses lose their registration to practice on a regular basis for divulging a patient's personal information. No matter the patient. That is why even relatives will be fobbed off with platitudes and generalisations, and suggetions to contact the patient directly. The dead nurse was senior nurse that night, so was required to handle incoming phonecalls in the absence of a receptionist. She would have been acutely embarassed by the storm of publicity and mockery which followed her mistake in not identifying the "joke" but possibly more so feeling guilty for having passed the call to her colleague, who may well have blown her own ability to work in nursing ever again. The fact that the patient was a royal is irrelevant, other than the immense degree of publicity from the celebrity aspect.

Sounds like platitudes and generalisations to me.

So the information divulged was that the patient had been drinking fluids and was sleeping.

So how much specific private information is it that a patient needs to drink and sleep and that both are "good for her"?

Well she was not fit to be promoted to senior nurse on duty if she was going to top herself for passing a call through. The fault is the hospital's for employing her in that job. The fault is the royals for going to that hospital and not some other hospital whose staff could cope more robustly with hoax calls.

Well anyone who is in danger of committing suicide for losing their job ought not to be pressured into having a job in the first place but be permanently "on the sick" and have their welfare taken care of by the state.

Oh, you were doing so well up until that point. The fact that the patient was a royal is what mattered most in the events that led to the suicide. The dead nurse was a married woman with kids and she must have been hoaxed some time in her life and managed to cope just fine.

No. I think it can be relatively OK to pull a hoax or another disrespectful stunt on an ordinary celebrity. Think of all those cream pies in famous faces. You don't hear about suicides in those cases. Didn't someone pretending to be doing a red carpet interview squirt Tom Cruise with a water pistol one time? Did the guy checking the press passes top themselves there?

It's different with the royals. A guy who was planning to heckle outside the church of the royal wedding was arrested the day before.

UK officialdom takes a very intolerant attitude to any disrespecting of the royals. It is simply not allowed.

LMFAO... this is the most ridiculous (*)(*)(*)(*) ive ever heard.... "we" are somehow responsible for some idiot killing themselves for reasons WE DONT KNOW.... and if she killed herself ONLY because of that prank call.... then well shes not worth fighting for lol...

its funny how quick liberals are ready to sell all of our freedoms away because some emotional mess killed themselves, probably for reasons unknown, or because of a PRANK CALL.....

the only one responsible for her death is herself.... the radiostation had NOTHING to do with it.

She listed a number of complaints in her notes, it seems, and I guess the station got a mention. Regardless of that, though, you're absolutely right.

What a callous, heartless world we live in. Irrespective of the circumstances, a woman has died and all I read is negative
comments about her state of mind and her degree of worth...and strangely enough, the most callous are the Yanks...where
life is worthless...God bless America...and all the budgie sh1ts that live there....

hmmm,
your pseudonym name is in stark contrast to your views.
I still believe, that without the prank call, this nurse would be alive.
But who cares, one nurse less, and we still will continue making jokes about others....

What I had stated was, since her suicide is to be elevated to political issue, then all suicdes should be handled accordingly. The living find it hard to equate a broken mind after it is gone. Many theories have been postulated about suicide, but none quite understand because there is no comparative studies done after with the person who commits suicide.
What really gets me going is now that she is gone, some require that a third party be held responsible for what she did. IMO, there were other issues besides just this one.
My gripe is, you take one out of tens of millions and elevate it to sainthood. What about the other tens of millions? Are they not worth your time as well? What is it that makes this one incident so unique that it must be held above others? I would rather think that some are callous because they use the suicde by others is a stepping stone to elevate one. Sad, it is when one takes their own life. It does affect those who survive her, but it is not their shame. It is a socialist mindset that holds the entire world accountable for the actions of one.

Quadruple the level of 'insensitivity' seen on this thread...

and one could begin to understand how a sensitive soul could be be tipped over the edge...

Actions have consequences...

The stress and busyness of a hospital is NOT the place for prank calls. Irresponsible and stupid to boot.

People here questioning the mental stability of the nurse... while I find myself questioning the GLARING MINDLESSNESS of the dj's.

Not everyone has a thick skin. Which is all the more reason for people to strive towards being decent and HONEST in their dealings with others.

might as well ban cars because of one idiot driving off the road.... might as well ban planes because a drunk pilot crashed and killed many.... might as well ban all guns because some crazy (*)(*)(*)(*) shot up a movie theater..... might as well ban all knives because some idiot stabbed himself to death.... might as well ban all relationships because one dude killed himself out of jealousy..... might as well ban all food because one person died of food allergies

just because one person does something completely (*)(*)(*)(*)ING STUPID... doesnt mean all of us sane people have to sacrifice our freedoms...

Wrong. There are special situations that should be addressed. Celebrities are at much higher risk for privacy invasion.

celebrities live off public adoration. They gladly take their millions from that adoration. If they don't like that adoration, good and bad, then opt out and give up the millions they derive from it.

It is the life they have chosen and benefitted greatly from, so basically...... Tough titties !

If they don't like the lack of privacy then leave the celebrity scene.

So, you want to ban jokes?
Is that it?
Could we hold out heads up once again, if we banned all jokes?

Being a celebrity doesn`t automatically disqualify someone from a right to privacy.

If jokes are meant to make the monkey out of others, if we have lost a decent behaviour, maybe jokes of that kind should be banned.
They let us appear as we are, quite low....

Thank-you!

Does everyone know what it is like early hours - minimal staff patients demanding attention medications to administer CORRECTLY and precisely - documentation to complete, observations to be done, patients to be assessed for signs of deterioration..........

And in the middle of all of this some lame brain DJ's think it is "funny" to ring for a prank

Did you know Australia was the first country to introduce mandatory seat belt laws?

Did you know we have mandated swimming pool fences?

See, we take protection of life seriously here

Mate - you have NO idea how nasty private patients can be

I would rather work in a public ward with the patients who are lying in bed surrounded by nits having pillow parties than work in a private hospital

Sometimes you make me ROFL :)

So if we are at the tipping point of no return with regards to AGW, CO2 and a runaway greenhouse effect.

Why did our JU-liar Gillard place all our lives/future in the hands of speculators and bankers on wall street?
