How nice. I'm curious, does the tradition go for every ship, or just the first ship?

I had no idea that was a tradition. How cool, and those two gals look so sweet, too!

    *yawn*

You would think that there had never been homosexuals in the military before.

Great picture to sign the end of an era of discrimination. Bravo for the women in the pic and gays in the military.

Other than the fact they picked two very pretty people for the shot, what's the big deal? If it were a picture of two men kissing, would there still be this sort of positive response?

It will be an even better day when this sort of thing recieves no special treatment or new coverage. When it's humdrum and not news-worthy, that's when the homosexual community will have won their day.

    What discrimination?

You seem to be making some kind of assumption here. And it is a relly bad one.

There have been gays in the military for centuries. And for the most part, nobody gave a (*)(*)(*)(*). The main reason why it became an issue during the Cold War was that the Soviets realized they became a great target of blackmail.

For the most part, nobody has given a (*)(*)(*)(*) about gays in the military. As long as you kept your affairs off-post, nobody cared. We had them back in the 1980's, and nobody cared. There were no "witch hunts" to find the queers.

Discrimination I can accept, if it is racial. But as far as I am aware, there is no way to look at somebody and tell they are homosexual. So how could I possibly discriminate against one?

"Oh my god, look at that man/woman! They look like they are gay, I am going to ruin their career!"

That is absolute nonsense, as spread by the ignorant.

Yes it would still be positive. Why should it matter what gender the people are that kiss.
I agree with you. It would be far better if there was true acceptance. The fact that this is the first time that gays are openly about to express affection for their partners makes it news worthy.

I don't see it as the gay community winning the day. It is a matter of equality. This has nothing to do with winning.

Why is it disgusting? What makes it in your mind more disgusting than a male and female or two females kissing?

It is true that gays have been in the military. The end of discrimination is when they can show affection openly as heterosexuals have always done.

You would certainly fit into the ignorant category if you do not see the discriminatory policy that is now gone.

Actually, I do not care what a person's sexuality is. I find it very unprofessional, and not appropriate.

People going around holding hands and kissing was also not accepted when I worked in the corporate world either. And it is certainly not considered "discrimination" there. Kissing a co-worker or partner in the hallways at Disney or Boeing would get you in trouble, just as it should in the military.

So you can call me ignorant, that only shows your own ignorance of my, my background, or what I believe. And no, I do not want to know about John and the hot guy he picked up at the bat last weekend. No more then I want to hear about Steve talking about the hot chick he picked up. We are in the military (or the corporate world) do to a business. Not talk about our sexuality, sexual conquests, or anything else like that.

It is not appropriate, no matter who is involved.

Whenever a ship returns to its home port, a sailor is selected to be the first off and kiss his/her spouse/girlfriend/boyfriend.

Yes, well, I'll be happy when all this noise is quieted down and we can get back to business at hand instead of all the (*)(*)(*)(*)ed fool classes telling us to do what we've been doing for the last two hundred thirty-plus years in the military. These classes are making me hate homosexuality--not because it's sinful or an abomination so much as the major annoyance of having to sit though these stupid classes. I frankly could care less who's banging who, so long as they do their (*)(*)(*)(*)ed job when the time comes.
