New WHO Report on Covid

There's some alarming stuff:

Among 55,924 laboratory confirmed cases reported as of 20 February 2020, the median age is 51 years (range 2 days-100 years old; IQR 39-63 years old) with the majority of cases (77.8%) aged between 30–69 years. Among reported cases, 51.1% are male, 77.0% are from Hubei and 21.6% are farmers or laborers by occupation.

So that's a large sample size. Here's what they found:

Approximately 80% of laboratory confirmed patients have had mild to moderate disease, which includes non-pneumonia and pneumonia cases, 13.8% have severe disease (dyspnea, respiratory frequency ≥30/minute, blood oxygen saturation ≤93%, PaO2/FiO2 ratio <300, and/or lung infiltrates >50% of the lung field within 24-48 hours) and 6.1% are critical (respiratory failure, septic shock, and/or multiple organ dysfunction/failure).

If that is true, it's going to put a huge strain on our medical resources. If this thing infects 10 million Americans (the flu infects about 30 million every year), 600,000 will be in intensive care, at least for a little while. That's a little less than all the staffed hospital beds in America.

In China, the overall CFR (crude fatality rate) was higher in the early stages of the outbreak (17.3% for cases with symptom onset from 1- 10 January) and has reduced over time to 0.7% for patients with symptom onset after 1 February (Figure 4).

That's in line with what we're seeing from the Diamond Princess: a mortality rate of just about 1%.

ETA: a bright spot here is this doesn't seem to affect kids much. That's really good news.

 

And another good thing is that WHO is famous for making mountains out of molehills.

We have a MSM playing the Fear of the Unknown (Greatest Feat Man Knows) to their drones who are spreading the ignorance. This is real information that should be the at the top of all the networks news cycles with doctors confirming this information. But, we all know that won't happen, because ORANGE MAN BAD!

Our medical system is robust and able to handle the wide variations in the number of severely sick-particularly during flu season.

Although its not yet known what type of "season" this virus has-since its spread in much the same way as a cold or flu-typically flu season tapers off by early march.

Also, the ICU is for the sickest of the sick and is very often unable to take patients as is.

Most of the sick would not be admitted and most of those admitted would not be placed in the ICU.

I think his post was about over playing the threat.

 

He does not suggest or imply that 10 million will be infected soon or even this year.

But this virus is apparently going to become a yearly thing, just like the flu. And the flu has a contagious factor and a lethality factor which are both less severe (based on the preliminary data) that COVId-19.

 

Yea, by downplaying and dismissing the results from the WHO that is supposedly known for "making a mountain out of a molehill" and trying to "set the stage for more funding."
